30th June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Member Steve Plant had a red letter day on Sunday at big Sandiway when he had three tench on feeder fished red maggot. All three were caught between 5am and 8.30 am the first his new personal best at 9lb followed by another at 8lb 13 last and the best looking of the three weighed in at 8lb 7oz.

I had a trip to the Derwent at Darley Abbey on Sunday to replace the inner lock. Only four anglers were fishing and although sport was slow quality fish were to be had perch to 1.5lb, carp anglers reporting big twenties from the stretch, I saw their photo's to prove it. The carp are there as a result of past floods when the carp stocked into the pools which WAA members can also fish were washed into the river. Whatever your preference you could find a swim to suit on this under used piece of river.

The rivers are generally fishing well although some like Dane are suffering from low water levels, with early morning and late evening proving to be best when the sun is lower. Just odd chub to 3lb the norm however long time member and Dane devotee Mike Ellison got the shock of his life when his luncheon meat bait attracted the attention of a 6lb mirror carp that he at first thought was a barbel. The fish was in mint condition and had probably never been caught before apparently a few carp are figuring in catches on other parts of the river too.

Worthington lakes has been giving great sport plenty of good roach, some anglers having bream to 8.5lb with eight or nine in a session not unusual odd carp to lower twenties. Our Wigan team recently made an astonishing albeit sad discovery of a carp dead at Johnson's pool it was estimated to be approx 25lb and a very old fish.

When John Dagnall shouted `all in' on Mondays match Ronnie Durr took it literally when he did a somersault into the Bridgewater canal, he spent the first hour of the match in an underwater search and rescue attempt for his pole sections. He failed to weigh in but was awarded 8.5 for his dive. Two of our lady members have been having good results fishing the London Bridge area having decent bream and a nice mirror carp of 15lb.

I must quash the disgraceful allegations made last week by my dis-respectful wife that I would use a rig which is less than immaculate. Total rubbish although with hindsight I do admit the float may have been stood on once or twice. The object of the exercise was to catch a handful of the smallest rudd, crucian carp and perch for a display tank on our stand at the Cheshire Show, the problem was to get tiny fish and not the chunky roach which were queuing up to take the bait. The display tank was a great success proving just how fascinating anglers and non anglers alike find fish. A tip for Ackers keep the bait going in little and often it took me a good twenty minutes to get my first bite and all on the drop.

Don't forget to let us have your Catch of the Month entries for July and keep the catch reports coming please.
