23rd June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Kev Barnett got a day off on opening day and went to Loton Park he had six barbel the best 8lb 4oz. According to his fishing buddy Steve Edge he is a lucky devil as he had had to work!

Steve's luck improved on Sunday when he had three barbel the best was 8lb but Kev's luck was in again and he landed the best fish of the day on the last cast which was a barbel of 8lb-13 so narrowly avoiding a blank.

The River Wye is on form Alan Wands had fifteen chub to 6lbs on feeder and halibut pellet, lots of dace showing on stick float tactics and maggot or caster. Plenty of trout on fly too. The barbel are not figuring in catches yet possibly spawning. Unfortunately the bailiff Alan Jones also reported he had found a pair of ripped waders discarded by an angler in the river…not the actions we expect from our members if it's your take it home.

The Dane is also giving good sport although quite low there are plenty of chub to just over 4lb

being caught. The new steps installed by our volunteers are making more pegs accessible and opening up potentially good winter swims.

The Bridgewater canal is giving really good bream catches for pleasure anglers on caster and corn the Hill top and Denbury Avenue doing particularly well in the evenings. Plenty of fish to be caught all along the canal especially in the evenings when there are less boats. However there has been a pollution incident on the `Kellogg's length in Manchester some soapy effluent has gone in and a few hundred small fish have been killed the EA are investigating.

There have been some good bream from the Mersey. Alan Faulkner included one of over 5lb in his weight in Saturdays Tom James Open his second successive win of that match in two years.

Grey mist and Rixton are both fishing well there are some cracking tench and some odd carp being caught on both waters.

On Ackers pits the roach and rudd sport is pretty good. Frank went on Monday night he fed a few maggots each put in at 5 meters, after about 20 mins there were fish everywhere roach, rudd or perch every put in. Frank's rig was a disgrace just an old one cobbled together from rubbish from the bottom of his box at least that's what it looked like! He still had fish after fish including some lovely chunky roach. We had the place to ourselves on a pleasant summer evening which was unexpected. I even braved the midges and caught a few on the `rubbish' rig.

Bailiff Mike Monks and another angler rescued the cygnet and removed line it had managed to swallow. It was very old line and had probably been buried in the silt for decades thankfully no ill effects as the hook had long ago rotted away. These days we all know to take line home and bundle it up and cut it into bits or burn it don't we?
