30th June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Member Steve Plant had a red letter day on Sunday at big Sandiway when he had three tench on feeder fished red maggot. All three were caught between 5am and 8.30 am the first his new personal best at 9lb followed by another at 8lb 13 last and the best looking of the three weighed in at 8lb 7oz.

I had a trip to the Derwent at Darley Abbey on Sunday to replace the inner lock. Only four anglers were fishing and although sport was slow quality fish were to be had perch to 1.5lb, carp anglers reporting big twenties from the stretch, I saw their photo's to prove it. The carp are there as a result of past floods when the carp stocked into the pools which WAA members can also fish were washed into the river. Whatever your preference you could find a swim to suit on this under used piece of river.

The rivers are generally fishing well although some like Dane are suffering from low water levels, with early morning and late evening proving to be best when the sun is lower. Just odd chub to 3lb the norm however long time member and Dane devotee Mike Ellison got the shock of his life when his luncheon meat bait attracted the attention of a 6lb mirror carp that he at first thought was a barbel. The fish was in mint condition and had probably never been caught before apparently a few carp are figuring in catches on other parts of the river too.

Worthington lakes has been giving great sport plenty of good roach, some anglers having bream to 8.5lb with eight or nine in a session not unusual odd carp to lower twenties. Our Wigan team recently made an astonishing albeit sad discovery of a carp dead at Johnson's pool it was estimated to be approx 25lb and a very old fish.

When John Dagnall shouted `all in' on Mondays match Ronnie Durr took it literally when he did a somersault into the Bridgewater canal, he spent the first hour of the match in an underwater search and rescue attempt for his pole sections. He failed to weigh in but was awarded 8.5 for his dive. Two of our lady members have been having good results fishing the London Bridge area having decent bream and a nice mirror carp of 15lb.

I must quash the disgraceful allegations made last week by my dis-respectful wife that I would use a rig which is less than immaculate. Total rubbish although with hindsight I do admit the float may have been stood on once or twice. The object of the exercise was to catch a handful of the smallest rudd, crucian carp and perch for a display tank on our stand at the Cheshire Show, the problem was to get tiny fish and not the chunky roach which were queuing up to take the bait. The display tank was a great success proving just how fascinating anglers and non anglers alike find fish. A tip for Ackers keep the bait going in little and often it took me a good twenty minutes to get my first bite and all on the drop.

Don't forget to let us have your Catch of the Month entries for July and keep the catch reports coming please.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

23rd June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Kev Barnett got a day off on opening day and went to Loton Park he had six barbel the best 8lb 4oz. According to his fishing buddy Steve Edge he is a lucky devil as he had had to work!

Steve's luck improved on Sunday when he had three barbel the best was 8lb but Kev's luck was in again and he landed the best fish of the day on the last cast which was a barbel of 8lb-13 so narrowly avoiding a blank.

The River Wye is on form Alan Wands had fifteen chub to 6lbs on feeder and halibut pellet, lots of dace showing on stick float tactics and maggot or caster. Plenty of trout on fly too. The barbel are not figuring in catches yet possibly spawning. Unfortunately the bailiff Alan Jones also reported he had found a pair of ripped waders discarded by an angler in the river…not the actions we expect from our members if it's your take it home.

The Dane is also giving good sport although quite low there are plenty of chub to just over 4lb

being caught. The new steps installed by our volunteers are making more pegs accessible and opening up potentially good winter swims.

The Bridgewater canal is giving really good bream catches for pleasure anglers on caster and corn the Hill top and Denbury Avenue doing particularly well in the evenings. Plenty of fish to be caught all along the canal especially in the evenings when there are less boats. However there has been a pollution incident on the `Kellogg's length in Manchester some soapy effluent has gone in and a few hundred small fish have been killed the EA are investigating.

There have been some good bream from the Mersey. Alan Faulkner included one of over 5lb in his weight in Saturdays Tom James Open his second successive win of that match in two years.

Grey mist and Rixton are both fishing well there are some cracking tench and some odd carp being caught on both waters.

On Ackers pits the roach and rudd sport is pretty good. Frank went on Monday night he fed a few maggots each put in at 5 meters, after about 20 mins there were fish everywhere roach, rudd or perch every put in. Frank's rig was a disgrace just an old one cobbled together from rubbish from the bottom of his box at least that's what it looked like! He still had fish after fish including some lovely chunky roach. We had the place to ourselves on a pleasant summer evening which was unexpected. I even braved the midges and caught a few on the `rubbish' rig.

Bailiff Mike Monks and another angler rescued the cygnet and removed line it had managed to swallow. It was very old line and had probably been buried in the silt for decades thankfully no ill effects as the hook had long ago rotted away. These days we all know to take line home and bundle it up and cut it into bits or burn it don't we?

coming please. Don't forget to let us have your Catch of the Month entries for June and keep the catch reports

16th June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The sun is shinning and the rivers are finally open again to our keen river anglers many of whom will have been traveling far and wide from the early hours, in order to be on the river at dawn many heading off to their own particular favorite fishing place and just as many trying somewhere for the first time.

All taking advantage of the diversity of fishing opportunities on the WAA license stretching from the beautiful River Wye in Herefordshire to the equally picturesque Ribble and Severn and all points in between!

The river Mersey fished reasonably well for the first match of the season see results below. Please be aware that barbless hooks are compulsory on this venue and keepnets may only be used in matches these are conditions of our lease.

I have just had a call as I write from Chris Edwards who has been fish spotting at Worthenbury before a trip later in the week; he said he had never seen so many big fish in one place on the river before there were literally hundreds possibly thousands. They were all shoaled up splashing and boiling together in the deeper water opposite the gravel bar along the straight beyond the bends.

Chris was unsure whether they were salmon or sea trout but either in that number must be a good omen for our game fishing devotees. He also spotted some good barbel ranging from about 8 to 12 lbs as well as decent chub often the `reccy' is as enjoyable as the fishing itself! I look forward to seeing the catch reports and passing them on next week.

I only got as far as the newly opened Ackers Pit earlier today and the water is still not looking `right'. There is a great deal of filamentous algae covering the bottom and early morning there is an unpleasant smell from the back pit suggesting all is not well with the water quality. The EA are continuing to monitor it for us.

However members present were catching nice roach and rudd just off bottom on maggot or small pellets. Just reminders there are some local fishery rules please check the notices.

Thanks to our members and bailiffs who alerted the police on several occasions during the last spell of good weather just in order to try and avert a tragic drowning such as took place on Appleton Reservoir.

Unfortunately it would appear there was no adult about on the day in question to alert the police. I would urge all members to be vigilant and call the police if they do see youngsters jumping into deep waters like these during the good weather.

Also if the idiot parents who keep bringing their kids and canoes to Moore Quarry read this `Grow up' it was like Blackpool there last Sunday and it is just as...... if not more dangerous than Appleton Reservoir. The water in Moore is deep and bitterly cold and only varies a few degrees from mid winter when there is ice on it to the hottest day in summer..
I hope everyone tempted to take a dip in unknown waters will remember what happened at Appleton and think again you just don't know what's under the surface.

Finally I would like to send our heartfelt condolences and deepest sympathy to the parents, family and friends of the young boy who sadly lost his life.

9th June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Friday we are continuing with our ongoing stocking policy at Sandiway large lake with the introduction of over £5000 of mirror carp which include fish of 28lbs, 23lbs, 22, lbs, 21lbs, and 20lbs. Deputy head bailiff Barry (Baz) Fleming had a personal best 12-2-0 bream from this fishery on Monday morning on sweetcorn. The fish had spawned and showed obvious signs of cleaning off.

On Tuesday 16th June after a ninety day close season our river fisheries are open for coarse fishing. I am not going to mention conditions as the last time I did this we had a literal monsoon. All I will say is that it is about time the close season nonsense was dispensed with as there is no scientific reason for its existence. The very presence of legitimate anglers on the banks protects our nation's rivers and certainly is not in any way detrimental.

More good news is that on the same date after a long wait Ackers Pit is open to members who must only fish from the platforms provided. The committee has imposed a no legering rule on the fishery. Moore Quarry which was closed in the interests of fish welfare is also now open.

Ackers Pit was stocked over the past twelve months with quality fish at great cost to Warrington Anglers. We were lucky enough to obtain some pure bred crucian carp which are hard to find nowadays as they readily interbreed with goldfish. I was therefore horrified to find out that last week some kind soul decided to empty his garden pond releasing goldfish and Koi carp into the pit. Not only is this for the reasons given highly irresponsible but also illegal. Fortunately we have a lead which has been passed to the appropriate authority for their action.

The dynamic duo of Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham are back in action following the latter's impressive backward summersault into the Trent & Mersey Canal last year which resulted in Ernie having to rescue him. Unfortunately Ernie is no spring chicken and the incident put him out of action for several months. Anyway this past week they visited Worthington Lakes where they both bagged up with double figure catches which included perch to 1.5lbs plus chunky roach and hybrids around the 1lb mark. Both fished a 20ft rod and waggler method alternating between maggot and caster.

Our Wigan complex of waters are fishing well with members more than happy with the upgrading of their sport on Fosters Pools, Woodshaw Reservoir, and Johnsons Pool. New member Dave Grindley tried Woodshaw last week and had several quality crucian carp plus a personal best tench.

2nd June 2009 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Choosing the 'Catch of the Month' at our committee meeting on Monday was not as difficult a task as usual owing to the 'Cicily Common' making an appearance for James Simpson earlier this month at 32-7-0.

This beautiful specimen was the unanimous choice and has netted him over £100 of BaitTech products plus a Korda carp care kit. Commiserations to the other entrants but keep the catch reports coming in there is the June prize up for grabs now.

Danny Worrall 10years had a personal best mirror carp from Grey Mist Mere on Sunday which weighed in at 21-0-0. After being advised by one of our bailiffs (who will remain nameless) that "You'll catch nothing there" he promptly latched onto the mirror which fell for no specially prepared boilies or other concoctions but amazingly hair rigged fake boilie and corn.

The Saturday Howleston Cup match was dire with only a couple of tiny fish caught and youngsters struggling for a bite. I can understand why after walking around the `Mist' yesterday the water was alive with fish moving and crashing around in the reeds they just didn't have food on their minds as they were too busy spawning. Many thanks to Barry Fleming and other carp anglers who ran the match and organised food for the competitors it was much appreciated.

Woodshaw Reservoir is providing good sport with small carp, crucians, roach and perch, mainly to maggot but paste is accounting for the bigger fish. Close by Fosters Pools are really worth a visit where it is almost a bite every cast, granted they are not all massive fish but there are still one or two that but a bend in the rod.

I really don't like to moan but the fact is that some anglers are fishing in snags using bait boats where only the occasional fish that is hooked is successfully landed. On a fish welfare aspect this is totally unacceptable. Also we have had several complaints about the behavior of a few members on the big lake at Sandiway who are playing loud music, sharing pegs not meant for two, and not using proper field craft when answering the call of nature. As usual a few could spoil things for everyone as it has sharply called into question the wisdom of allowing anglers to stay for three consecutive nights. The committee and bailiffs will be monitoring the situation.

Please let me have your catch reports on 01928 716238 FAX 01928713898 or e-mail frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street will be open on Friday evening as usual between 7 & 9-30pm for subscriptions, new members, etc.
