25th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Wayne Murphy had a productive 17hour Thursday overnight session on Small Sandiway last week ending up with six runs resulting in a brace of carp just over the 20lbs mark, a 9lbs tench, and to finish off a cracker of mirror weighing 27lbs on the nose, despite losing two fish.  After finding his mark he baited with krill boilies, hemp, and sweetcorn. He tipped his krill bait with a piece of fake corn and fed every couple of hours and after each fish.

Mike Christopher enjoyed a short after-work session on the River Ribble on Thursday to be rewarded with a cracking barbel around the 11lbs mark. He has done very well in his barbel quest over the past twelve months with the best to date a fish of 15lbs. He legered with Vortex CKO cocoon boilies on the hook.

Stuart Roberts finally got round to having a go at Appleton Reservoir last Friday after meaning to try it for ages. He started off on the tip but ended up on the waggler as once he got them feeding the tip was flying round before the feeder had even hit the bottom! He fished groundbait, caster, with hemp on the feeder and then loose caster and hemp on the waggler line, catching plenty of roach on both baits to well over a pound and a few perch to 1.5lbs.

Richard Pierce fished our stretch of the Wye last weekend where he reports the access to the river as being very overgrown. Nevertheless, he caught seven barbel between 4 and 6lbs, five chub to 3.5lbs, and load of dace.

Mick Clitheroe's trip to the Wyre last Saturday saw the river carrying a fair bit of extra water and chocolate brown coloured. He was fishing by 5am setting up with a feeder packed with a mixture of ground pellets and groundbait with a lump of luncheon meat on the hook. The first 3 casts produced chub of 2lb, 2lb12oz, and lastly one of 4lb 3oz then it went dead. He decided to try another swim but on arrival a rumble of thunder and spots of rain gave him second thoughts and he headed back to his car by which time the rain was biblical. Mick only fished for about two hours but as he said, "It was worth it. The river is a little cracker when you hit it right".

Andy Corr had a productive Sunday session on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery catching loads of roach, perch, and crucians. He fished the pole at 5metres feeding F1 green groundbait while loose-feeding corn and caster. The weather was unkind as Andy ended up drenched to the skin…so much so that our bailiff made him a brew in the cabin.  Anyone visiting this small fishery for the first time will no doubt agree with members comments that it is a credit to the volunteers that maintain it.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Agden where Al Faulkner drew the adjacent peg from where last month Paul Field was just short of breaking the longstanding 45lbs canal match record with 42lbs.  Well, Al worked his peg which produced a winning net of six bream plus two pounds of roach for a total weight of 23-1-0. He caught all the bream on worm. Alan Brown on the next peg was the runner-up with a bonus bream to add to his catch of roach for 7-6-0. Nineteen anglers fished.

Our Sid Jones Open Match took place on the Mersey last Sunday where Mike Dench clearly on a roll chalked up another win to add to his AT River Fest qualifier on the Trent the previous week.  Mike drew peg 21 where in a river running through with extra water from recent downpours, he fished the bolognaise with maggot and caster on the hook catching two decent sized bream, a hybrid, roach, and perch for a weight of 18-9-0. Jimmy Byrne took second place from peg 18 where he fished a groundbait feeder at 14metres with maggot and pinkie on the hook for a net of four bream and twenty plus roach and perch for 17-13-0.

18th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

18th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Nice to see Phillip Brown back on Grey Mist this past week with another member where despite the spreading lilies he fished a tip rod with a method feeder. Phil had a tench and a roach but lost a carp and his fellow angler a brace of tench and a roach. Slow fishing but enjoyable nevertheless. The fish are there in numbers but pegs are restricted. Will be sprayed again this year along with Rixton Claypits but unfortunately the chemicals now legally available are not as effective as those we could use in the past.

The Weaver Navigation …Tony Farrington reports another great afternoon there with loads of quality roach plus odd skimmers and perch all caught on 4 and 5metre whips and presumably maggot. He describes it as 'Awesome fishing' and definitely worth a trip… easy methods with cracking catches.

The small lake at Sandiway is producing some good catches with fish showing all over the water. One word of warning however to those members fishing any of our waters who feel it is ok to ignore our rule that all litter must be taken home and certainly not dumped in rubbish bins or elsewhere. We do not need those who behave in this way as part of our club…so your shout…get caught and lose your membership.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane. Not for some time has there been a joint win but this week George Hollis shared the winner's purse with match organiser Jimmy Byrne when they both put their catches of mainly roach on the scales for identical weights of 5-8-0. They both fished red maggot and pinkie over a bed of groundbait on the far shelf, Jimmy drew next to George Gleaves Bridge and George was two pegs into the long length. Al Faulkner was third with 3-12-0. Eighteen anglers fished.

After a long wait the 1st Association Contest took place on the Mersey on Sunday and saw the winner Pete Jones the clear winner with a weight of 14-13-0 from peg 32. The river was carrying extra water and 'towing through' but Pete fished the feeder and caught all his fish which included a bonus bream to add to his catch of skimmers and a good number of small fish all caught on single white maggot. Bob Campbell was the runner-up after having spent an hour or so on the feeder for only a few small roach he changed to stick-float and caster close-in. It was the right choice ending up with a catch of mainly roach for 5-2-0.

Congratulations to committee member Mike Dench who qualified in the forty peg Angling Trust River Fest match on the Trent on Saturday. Mike caught mainly dace from peg 10 for a winning weight of 18-12-0.

11th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The Weaver Navigation is certainly gaining in popularity with Jason Best who was there again this past week but on this occasion for a brief evening session. He stuck to his method on the pole between 5 and 6metres to catch another cracking net of bream, skimmers, and roach. Maggot and groundbait again did the trick. Malcolm Turner even braved the torrential rain on Saturday evening and fished the feeder on the venue for a catch of bream, roach, and perch.

However, the best catches on this venue this past week are a toss-up between Simon Oldfield and Tony Farrington, the latter with over a hundred roach plus a few bream and dace which he estimates at around 30lbs, all caught on the short whip and maggot. Whereas Simon fed groundbait laced with chopped worm and caster on a top three kit plus three pole sections for a weight of around 35lbs…made up of bream, skimmers, roach, and perch…hard to choose but they both showed the potential of this fishery. Lots of complimentary comments regarding the mystery member who looks after the place.

Stuart Atherton enjoyed his Saturday afternoons lure fishing on the Bridgewater Canal between Walton and Moore with a trio of jack-pike and two perch. He caught then all using ultralight lures. Eddie Maine also had a decent result when he was also lure fishing on Sunday evening in the Lymm area. He caught three perch and a jack-pike which he reckons was around the 10lbs mark.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at the Daresbury Laboratories. The winner, Jeff Stoll drew opposite the Labs and fished worm and caster on the pole for a nice net of skimmers, perch, and roach for a weight of 4-2-0. George Hollis made the frame again following his last week's win but had to drop a place to take the runner-up spot with a net of roach using pinkie for 3-12-0. Sixteen anglers fished.

The 1st Association Contest kicks off the Mersey matches on Sunday 16th July … a month late but let's hope there is some decent catches. Please note Ray has informed me that there are only 23 pegs already strimmed and any help would be appreciated before the match…or bring a stout rod-rest for a clearance session on the day. 😊

4th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th July 2023 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Baron reports braving as he describes 'The Ho Chi Minh' trail to fish the River Dee at Worthenbury…I must admit that it is a rather rough bumpy track but well worth the trip. Although he wasn't expecting too much at first sight of the river, he had a small chub on his first cast followed by quality dace every 'chuck' for the first three hours interspersed with small chub to around 12oz. Sport eased off for an hour around midday but then came back on for their last hour. His mate also enjoyed his day with chub to 1.5lbs plus dace and a grayling around the pound mark. Tony commented, "Excellent days fishing on a beautiful stretch of river."

After witnessing the horrors of the Mersey fish deaths on the 14th June Jason Best definitely needed a pick-me-up and his visit to the Weaver Navigation over the weekend certainly helped. He fished the pole between 5 and 6metres to catch a cracking net of bream, skimmers, roach, and perch. Maggot and groundbait is the favoured method.

After being reunited with his favourite hat that he lost on his previous visit to Rixton Claypits thanks to a fellow angler Scott Broadhurst was back again on Monday. Despite being soaked to the skin with the heavy persistent rain it didn't deter him and he ended up with catch of seventeen bream.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Bridgewater Canal in the Agden Bridge length in heavy rain and blustery winds. The winner, George Hollis drew in Agden Boats and with the conditions as they were decided to fish just the top four section of his pole using maggot and pinkie. Well, it worked and he included a bonus bream of a couple of pounds along with roach and perch for a weight of 5-3-0. Rod Fraser was the runner-up with 4-14-0 with a net of roach to 12oz and a decent hybrid, all caught on caster. Fourteen anglers fished.

Advanced notice that the Mersey matches will recommence on Sunday 16th July … a month late but let's hope there are some decent catches. Ray Boden who will be running the matches has reported a couple of good sessions on the river the latest on Monday this week saw him catch on both the tip and float methods. He has caught bream to 5lbs, dace, silver bream, one perch and a small chub.  Ne member Dave Etheridge reports that he has been fishing a few pegs up from Howley Weir over the last week. Although the fish were small, he caught about thirty fish per session. Dave found stick-float the most productive than the feeder although the bigger roach and bream hybrids were caught on the latter.
