22nd March 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column Notes

22nd March 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Committee member Jay Makin was back on Grey Mist on Thursday and was more than happy with his catch of three tench. Best a male of around 9lbs all caught over a few free offerings and solid PVA bags loaded with micros, 14mm munch baits, and crumb with double corn on the hook. Carp also being caught as the good weather continues. Looks good for the weekend.

Phil Fryer who joined this year tried out Mowpin, one of our Wigan waters on Sunday for the first time. Arriving at the fishery at 1pm on what was a sunny spring like afternoon he weighed up the water for a few minutes and soon spotted signs of fish movement, mainly carp basking on the surface. Not fancying tangling with carp on light tackle he kicked-off with a maggot feeder and single red maggot. Action was instant, catching rudd after rudd, nothing massive but nice fish all the same. After a while Phil latched onto something that was definitely not a rudd, turning out to be a chub, the last thing he was expecting after spending the river season avoiding them as he targeted barbel. 😊 He will be back again to try for the crucian carp.

Andy Corr reckoned that the roach are waking up on Appleton Reservoir, confirmed by a cracking net of silver beauties caught on Wednesday on the tip using maggot over groundbait. Ian Swindles also latched onto the Res-roach thanks to Andy sharing his catch information online. Same method and similar catch. Another plus this week is that the carpark on the 'tree bank' of this fishery is now open again to our members. Ensure you observe the parking direction notices.

Ray Boden who with others were clearly missing their regular Mersey Series (now stopped due to the coarse fish closed season until 16th June) organised a Sunday match on the Bridgewater Canal at Boothstown. Neil Davies was the winner with 7-3-0 made up of a brace of decent skimmers plus roach to 8oz caught on pole and caster tactics. Ray Boden was the runner-up with 4-6-0 on silver bream and rudd taken on pinkie.

Our weekly Monday Disabled & Over 60's Match on the Bridgewater Canal was drawn this week at The Tramps Grave and pegged either side of Moore Bridge. Winner Neil Buist who clocked up his first win of the year in this popular match series drew opposite the moored narrowboats on the Walton side of the bridge. He fished pole and bread punch for a 3-12-4 net of roach adding almost 3lbs to his weight of the previous week. It definitely was the best area to draw as the next two weights came from adjacent pegs with Alan Brown taking second place with 3-9-0. The opposite side of the bridge didn't fish as expected and saw anglers struggling for bites with the best result of 1-14-0 coming from the famous Tramps Grave peg. Nineteen anglers turned out.

Working Parties: - Thanks to our volunteers who made yet another peg improvement at Rixton Claypits on Sunday. Have a week off, its Mother's Day this Sunday but more dates to be published. Anyone who can spare a couple of hours to help are always more than welcome.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days. Alternatively, you can post to Warrington Anglers Association PO. Box 71, Warrington WA1 1LR where mail is collected weekly.

I really appreciate any catch reports from members, especially at this time of the year when they are understandably few and far between with there being not many anglers out fishing. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238
