26th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

26th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

All anglers should hurry to ensure that they have their say regarding adding fish eating birds, notably cormorants and goosanders to the General Licence so that we can be more able to protect our valuable fish stocks from the growing numbers of these birds that are having a devastating effect on our fisheries. This is possibly the only chance for anglers to have their say and make a real difference….so do it now as you must complete the survey before the 5th December!

All you need to do is go onto the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) website and search for the Wild Birds General Licence Survey if the following link which you can copy and paste into your browser does not work:-  https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/general-licences-for-wild-birds-survey-on-management-measures-in-england

If anyone is looking to either join Warrington Anglers Association now or purchase one as a Christmas present for someone, the best time is after the 1st December for the 2020 membership. You can either call to our office at 52, Parker Street, Warrington, on a Friday evening between 7pm and 8-30pm or join online. If you let us know we will post those intended as Xmas presents to the purchaser.

Our Christmas prize Mersey Match took place on Sunday at Mersey Walk and the result produced what is believed to be Warrington Anglers Association's oldest ever match winner. Regular Mersey and canal match attendee Stan Charnock at eighty-four fished his favourite quiver tip method with a groundbait feeder and maggot for a decisive win with three roach and a bonus bream which sent the scales round to 6-5-0. Second placed Roy Everson put together an all roach catch caught on both groundbait feeder and maggot and Bolognese for a winning weight of 3-11-0. Twenty-one anglers took part in this WAA sponsored event but special thanks go to Ade Green for ensuring that there were ample prizes to go around and nobody left empty handed.

Our Monday Disabled and Over 60's match was on the Bridgewater Canal this week at Preston Brook and was a real struggle for bites. Keith Dentith was the winner with a small roach and perch catch for a weight of 0-12-2. Jimmy Byrne was second with 0-7-4. It is the Dead Length next week where fish annually shoal up for the winter so hopefully, we should see some better results.

This is the time of year when there is a vast reduction of anglers on the banks so I would really welcome any catch reports good, bad, or indifferent as these help fellow members to know how waters are fishing and plan their outings. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.

19th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Jorden Ackers posted pics on our members Facebook page of two cracking perch from 'a stretch of canal' but withheld the exact location, absolutely no problem with that. His advice was light lures with decent paddle tails. Three of our canal fisheries have produced fish of this calibre, namely the Bridgewater, Trent & Mersey, and the not so widely appreciated Macclesfield Canal where in the past quality perch have been landed in matches. So, if you fancy a slice of the action simply arm yourself with an unhooking mat (pike are more than a possibility), a light spinning/drop-shot rod and reel, landing net, assortment of lures, and you are ready to go.

Still not the best of conditions but at least our Mersey Match Series was on again this Sunday following the cancellation last week due to flood conditions. However, not a lot to write home about as understandably at this time of the year anglers struggled for bites but Roy Everson put together a catch of ten roach and a 4oz skimmer caught on groundbait feeder and maggot for a winning weight of 1-11-0. Close on his heels was Jim Gannon using the same method who also had ten roach for 1-8-0 but unfortunately not the vital 4oz skimmer!

Our Monday Disabled and Over 60's match was back on the Bridgewater Canal this week at Daresbury Labs stretch. Bud Lea drew the peg nearest to the expressway to catch eight roach and a bonus 2lbs bream on pole-fished bread punch to take a clear win with 2-11-9. Second placed Roy Brown pegged nearer the Labs also had about the same number of roach for 0-8-13. Seventeen anglers turned out.

A warning to anyone contemplating a trip to the Dee at Worthenbury please be aware that a member reported recent damage to the access track at Worthenbury confirmed by our local bailiff due to run-off from flooded fields into the brook.

12th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Last week I heard quite positive rumours that there has been a 41lbs carp caught from Sandiway Big Lake. I understand that it was stocked in 2005 at 15lbs so it has shown a steady growth record. I would welcome any further detail from the 'mystery captor'.

Despite the weather it is a case of more pike reports no doubt because members can travel light and choose reasonable lulls in the rainy conditions. Ian Pargeter sent me a report from the Bridgewater Canal at Boothstown, which is an area of the Bridgewater that we rarely hear about despite as I am informed it is full of fish. Ian was targeting the pike and fishing lures and hadn't had a take for the first hour but kept on the move. Then within in the space of two hundred metres he landed three fish, nothing massive but all in pristine condition. Sam Jeffries fished the canal at Preston Brook on Sunday and had several takes but ended up with one pike landed weighing 12-8-0.

Much to the disappointment of our hardy band of Mersey match series supporters the event was cancelled this week due to the extreme flood conditions. Fingers crossed it should be on for next Sunday. Match organiser Ray Boden has asked me to mention that he would like members to book on our Christmas Mersey Match by Sunday 17 November 2019 so he has an accurate count of those taking part.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match was fished on our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery on Monday and saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne clock up yet another win.  Jimmy had a net of roach and skimmers caught on the pole using maggot and caster for a weight of 5-15-0. Mike Worley fished the tip and maggot and took second place with 4-3-4 of bream and roach.

5th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column Notes

5th November 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Regular contributor Neil Plunkett thought the gap in the recent frosts on Monday may hopefully give him a chance of some decent sport at our Mount Fishery at Buckley. Well, sometimes a hunch is as good a reason for making a decision as any other, and as it turned out it was right on the money. He fished a deeper section and had a great morning with twelve carp. Three edged into double figures, plus a nice bream and two large roach both well over a pound, one nearly 2lbs. All were caught on legered meat or corn. Neil had the place to himself and his comment, "Great Fishery" is like a thank you to our volunteers for all the hard work that has made the water what it is today.

More pike reports last Thursday Phil Brown had two takes on the Bridgewater and lost one tail-walking pike and landed the other. This week on Sunday Joe Evans on his first ever predator fishing canal visit ended up with four pike, best estimated around 12lbs. He caught two on smelt and two on lures.

Stuart Peters visited our stretch of the Ribble at Hurst Green for the first time on Saturday and after a bit off wasted effort in finding the swims compounded by him leaving his groundbait at the opposite end of the stretch he eventually set up undeterred and an hour later was into his first Ribble barbel possibly a double only to lose it at his feet. Eventually he was into another smaller but cracking looking fish at 4.5lbs. After a quiet spell a move of swim brought a flurry of dace and at the death another barbel of 6lbs. As he said in present conditions it is something of a trek but he reckons in the words of Arnie, 'I will be back'.

The lone angler on Ackers Pit on Saturday was more than happy with his catch, hardly able to believe that there were no other anglers on the fishery. He fished a small waggler against the reeds and started off with a handful of small 2-3oz roach on pinkie but a change to caster brought the better stamp roach on the feed. He ended up with over 10lbs of roach to 12oz.

Our Sunday Mersey match series held this week at Victoria Park where match organiser Ray Boden put 5-8-0 on the weigh scale to take a comfortable win. He fished bolognaise style loose-feeding red maggot for an all roach catch with the exception of a small skimmer. Neil Buist aka 'The Engine' took the runner-up spot with 3-15-0 of roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match was fished on the Trent & Mersey at Canal Billinge on Monday and saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne who as is our normal tradition had his winning No.1 end peg drawn by another angler. Jimmy had a net of roach and gudgeon caught mainly on pole and pinkie with a few on maggot and caster for 5-1-0 stopping the previous days Mersey match winner Ray Boden from making it a double. Ray wasn't too far behind with a weight of 4-8-12.

Thanks to members who take the trouble to send in catch reports which help fellow members to know how waters are fishing and plan their outings. Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
