6th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
One of our members rang me on Tuesday morning to say that fish were in distress at Statham Pool and that he had reported it to the Environment Agency. It wasn't too long before the E A Fisheries Team were on site where the dissolved oxygen level was found to be down to only 5%. A short time later aeration equipment was putting lifesaving oxygen back into the water giving hope that a massive fish kill could be averted. At the present time it seems to have hit bream and a few carp plus a single pike which is unusual as they are usually one of the first species to succumb to low oxygen levels. Many thanks to those members who turned up to help save the fishery, although more help may be needed.
There are some good catches of carp being reported from Appleton Reservoir with James Bradshaw enjoying his Saturday overnight session with nine fish, but not one was caught during the night. Although he was disappointed that he didn't manage to make it into double figures all the carp were well over that with the biggest at 24lbs. Joe Bright landed a mirror which weighed in at 23-8-0. Ian Sewell had a productive session with some clonking roach using a small feeder and maggot.
Paul Knowles fished the Mount at Buckley on Sunday and snapped his quiver tip but the consolation was in the catch of a carp of over 8lbs and a bream, backed up by some specimen roach which took a liking to everything from mini boilies, 10mm wafters, and corn. This is a great all-round fishery and well worth a visit.
Craig Stubbs and his mate Dave had another great day on Arley Reservoir on Sunday catching over eighty pounds of fish between them. Their catches were made up of bream, hybrids, roach, skimmers and perch.
The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway Allotments was won this week by match organiser Ray Boden with a weight of 5-4-0 made up of a 3lbs bream and skimmers all taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Mike Worley took second place, again on the feeder and included a 2lbs chub plus skimmers for a weight of 4-7-0.
The Challenge Shield match also fished at Victoria Park was won by Pete Howard with 15-11-0 made up of a bonus 3lbs bream with the rest skimmers to a pound taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Danny Sixsmith took the runner-up spot with an all roach catch taken on pole and maggot for a weight of 11-15-0.
Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge was won by Lenny (End Peg) Dutton who drew true to form. He had an all roach catch taken on the pole using bread and pinkie. The runner up spot was taken by octogenarian Stan Charnock who fished a small groundbait feeder and triple pinkie to snare a 3lbs bream plus a perch for 3-2-0.
