30th July 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Committee member Ade Green had a busy session on the River Dee this week at Shocklach where he fished the stick-float using maggot and caster for net of roach, dace, and small chub, plus a couple of grayling and a trout for a weight of around 8.5lbs.
Mike Roberts reports having a cracking catch of over 20lbs of roach, rudd, perch, and skimmers on his first visit to the Weaver Navigation. He fished the pole at 6metres feeding groundbait and maggot with single on the hook for a bite every chuck. He fished behind the industrial estate near the rowing club and a revisit is definitely on the cards.
There are some good catches of roach being caught at Appleton Reservoir and most members seem to be catching the occasional carp, although I had a report of eleven by a pair of anglers in a night session. The swimmers were out last week so thanks to the members, particularly the two junior members who cleared up the mountain of rubbish that had been strewn about the banks. One of the youngsters was justly rewarded afterwards with a PB. Mirror of 20lbs.
Neil Plunkett was out this week on the Ribble at Hurst Green where he set his stall out for barbel on the feeder but to no avail with only a couple of roach to show for his efforts. However, a change to a stick-float and loose-feeding maggot saw his luck change catching a decent stamp of roach to 12oz.
Ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner targeted Ackers Pit this week where they had a busy session with over a hundred small rudd, roach, and perch caught on waggler and maggot. No specimens but nevertheless they were both kept busy with a fish every cast.
The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Mersey Walk was won this week by Bob Campbell with a weight of 8-10-0 helped by a bonus 5lbs bream to which he added some skimmers all taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Derek Bibby was second fishing the same method with 6-12-0 of skimmers and roach.
The Tom James Open also fished at Mersey Walk was won by Jimmy Byrne with a net of 10lbs made up of a bonus 5lbs bream with the rest skimmers taken on a groundbait feeder and red maggot. On form Derek Bibby retained the runner-up spot again with a weight of 8-0-0 of skimmers, roach, and perch again on feeder tactics.
Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday saw another change of venue to the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge but there was no change from the previous week of the first and second places. On form Rod Frazer was the winner with 9-1-2 drawing a peg by the marina and catching mainly roach plus a few skimmers on pole and caster. Jimmy Byrne was second with 8-7-12 of roach and perch. Seventeen anglers fished with an average catch of over 4.25lbs which saw increasing numbers of gudgeon turn up in catches.
