26th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
The Northern Angling Show at the Manchester Arena this past weekend which Warrington Anglers Association have attended since its inception was again an enjoyable event. Our 'team' always look forward to meeting up with both existing and new members who visit our stand. As things quietened down towards the end of the Saturday session, we started a new trend with the first recorded NAS tucker trial when following a £5 bet Ade Green ate a boilie presented on a cocktail stick that had been dipped in some brown goo. The 'not for human consumption' was ignored, a fiver was at stake, despite the possibility of the trots or worse. It was recorded, but language prevented its showing on our members Facebook page!
It started a few weeks ago on Grey Mist when the tench awakened from their winter quietude and got their heads down to feed on anglers' baits. Carp soon followed the trend, no doubt helped by the unseasonal warm weather and although the tench action has slowed fish are still being caught. On Tuesday afternoon three carp were landed, two weighing in at over 22lbs and one of 23lbs. Appleton Reservoir is also producing a few carp catches but Alan Grainger fishing waggler and maggot enjoyed a short two-hour session catching quality roach while trying out a new rod. He reckoned that he had around twenty fish with some around the pound mark.
Our Sunday Mersey Series at Mersey Walk saw Neil Buist put in a winning appearance when fishing pole and maggot catching roach to 8ozs he almost doubled the weight of second placed Ed Frangleton who fished the same method. Neil put 10-6-0 on the scales against Ed's 5-9-0. The only disappointment was news that another seal has come over the weir in the high tide and will have a devastating effect on existing fish stocks whilst now trapped between the two weirs. In the past few years the majority of specimen carp, pike, and bream numbers on this short stretch have been decimated by such visitations. I understand these animals have been removed in the past from other river locations for the good of their own health but nobody seems to want to do anything in this area.
The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match held on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton saw Barry Chambers miss the draw and instead he fished a pleasure session at Preston Brook, although poles apart he certainly made up for it when he had a fish every cast. In the match Alan Brown was a clear winner with 6lbs of roach and perch caught on pole, alternating between bread punch and pinkie. On the next peg Jimmy Byrne took second place with a weight of 4-15-7.
