5th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th March 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Emma Dunbavand has been having some pike success on Grey Mist lately and Saturday was no exception when she landed three fish in around an hour and a half. Her comment, "Fab afternoons fishing."

Tench are still featuring in catches on the Mist and Phil brown was in action again on Monday when he landed three quality fish. I even bought some bait myself today (Tuesday) hoping I can get out for a few hours.

Now there's a river I have not had a report from for some time, the Gowy where we own a length and rent others. Paul Harrison walked most of it on his recent visit dropping a light stick-float in here and there catching about twenty small roach and a dace of about 6ozs. I would lay a bet that his was the first line cast in the water this season. If you know different please get in touch. Of course, the 14th March will be the last time you can fish it for coarse fish until the 16th of June, with those dates heralding the 90-day dinosaur of a close season.

What I do wonder is how many river anglers have actually filled in the online 'River coarse fishing close season consultation' which ends on Monday 11th March. It is vitally important that anglers who fish rivers have their say on this imposed restriction to our sport for which there is no proven benefit or reason. I would urge everyone to go online to the Environment Agency website and complete the consultation document.

I would remind members that all our gates should be locked where fitted. They are there for a reason and that is to protect our fisheries and members property.  A member received a ban this week for failing to re-lock a gate that he had already unlocked and driven through. Our rules are not complicated and simply common sense. The excuse 'I didn't know' does not cut any ice, read the rules which you agreed to accept when you joined.

Our Sunday Mersey Series drawn at Mersey Walk saw match veteran Jimmy Byrne take another win with 11-4-0 of roach up to 10ozs caught on pole and maggot tactics. Taking second place and back in the prize money after somewhat of a lean spell was WAA committee member Ade Green who chose a different approach by starting on maggot feeder whilst loose-feeding caster on a bolo line where he ended up catching most of his all roach net for a weight of 7-10-0.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60's match saw a change of venue to Woodshaw Reservoir where it turned out that bites were hard to come by but Tim Dwerryhouse was a clear winner with a mixed net of roach and perch for 8-10-7. Alan Brown was in second place with all the 4's 4-4-4.

Keep those catch reports coming, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.
