12th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th February 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Philip Brown has lately had a number of enjoyable sessions on Grey Mist, starting last Thursday when despite the high winds he caught five tench with the best at 7-12-0. All fish were caught using a block-end feeder with three maggots on the hook and fake corn on the hair. At the Mist again on Monday he only had two fish, a tench of 5-12-0 topped by a mirror carp weighing in at 20-4-0. The following day he had two tench around the 6.5lbs mark. Also, overnight on Saturday other members caught a number of carp with several in the 20lbs bracket plus a few tench.

Still plenty of predator action on the Bridgewater Canal where on Sunday Shaun Kennedy reports catching three perch, best around 2lbs and two pike probably 7 or 8lbs apiece fishing between. He was using a green fluorescent rubber drop-shot lure to 5lbs BS line. Just a reminder to any members who themselves fancy trying their hand that they should always carry an unhooking mat in the interests of fish welfare.

Thanks to the members who have posted helpful advice on our Facebook page regarding the new stretch on the Weaver Navigation. The nearest postcode to the start of the stretch at Frodsham swing-bridge is WA7 3GF which takes you to houses approximately 100 yards from the bridge. Also, I have had some encouraging phone conversations with members who have fished the Navigation in the past when they caught mixes of roach, hybrids, skimmers, perch, and quality bream. To add to this some years ago I took a fish-finder along the navigation which showed large shoals of fish in parts. Definitely worth a look and I would welcome any catch reports.

Our Sunday Mersey Series at Victoria Park was really hard going and new member Kevin Hall needed only 1-8-0 to take his first win with WAA. Kevin fished a groundbait feeder with red maggot and pinkie on the hook to catch small roach and hybrids. Second placed Mike Dench also used feeder tactics for his two fish, a tiny roach and a bonus chub for a weight of 0-13-0.

Following a week's rest due to the previous weeks frozen canal the regulars were happy to be back on the cut for Monday's Disabled & Over 60's Match at Hough's Bridge. George Hollis held off second placed Jimmy Byrne when he put together his winning catch of 4-1-10 made up of roach and perch caught on bread and pinkie. Jimmy weighed 3-3-8.

Keep those catch reports coming, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to weigh up how waters are fishing to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

If you haven't received your 2019 membership by now please get in touch as soon as possible. WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.
