3rd January, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
I haven't had a report from Association owned Wide Hole at Poynton for some time but new member Derek Hayes who has been trying out our various waters decided on a visit last Monday. Pike were his target and he set up two rods, one with sprat and the other with lamprey and although his first run came to nothing he ended up with five fish, the best 14-12-0. This fishery although small is open on one side to the Macclesfield Canal and offers fish refuge from boat traffic. Catches of bream, skimmers, roach, and occasional carp to double figures have previously featured from this underused fishery. More reports please.
Ant Higham aka King of the River started 2017 with a New Year's Day win on our Mersey Series match with 2-13-7 of roach save for one perch taken on ground bait feeder and maggot. Last week's winner Martin Lenihan was relegated to second place with an all roach catch weighing 2-8-8.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match turned out to be another grueling session on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road with members struggling for bites. Ron Durr landed a bonus perch of 12ozs early on in the match and added a few small fish to win with 0-14-6. Warrington Anglers Vice President Geoff Brooks took the runner-up spot with 6ozs.
The match is back on the Bridgewater at Houghs Bridge next week where members have been at least catching a few fish including some quality roach on caster but mainly smaller fish on pinkie. A few small pike are also being caught but when I tried my hand on Bank Holiday Monday the toothy predators avoided me like the plague. Desperate to get out of the house for some fresh air I had decided to christen my drop-shot rod and in desperation must have tried all the lures in my bag.
Don't forget the 2016 night permits ran out on the 31st December so bookings on your old number will not be accepted.
WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 8-30pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries. Please email catch details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.
