31st January 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

31st January, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is a fact that nationally there are less youngsters coming into our sport year on year which is of great concern because they are our future. There are a variety of reasons put forward but I know one thing that in my day most of the kids in the neighbourhood had at least tried angling. So, our committee have decided on a trial basis to allow all senior members to take any non-member aged twelve years of under to selected waters with immediate effect. They are Woodshaw Reservoir, Ackers Pit, Offa's Dyke, and the Bridgewater Canal. For safety reasons, it will be a one adult member to one child ratio. Also, please ensure that the weather is reasonable and that they wear suitable clothing as there is nothing more guaranteed to put kids off than to be wet and cold.

A fishery that rarely gets a mention in this column is our Association owned Wide Hole at Poynton where we also own adjacent land. Due to subsidence, many years ago, it is directly linked to the Macclesfield Canal and is a fish refuge from this waterway when at times large shoals of bream and roach can be found plus some decent sized pike. Geoff Cropper didn't pick ideal conditions for his first visit to the water on Sunday when in over three hours on feeder tactics and varying his baits using chopped worm, dead red maggot, and corn there was no sign of a bite. Better luck next time.

Another hard match this week for our Mersey Series devotees (Mersey maniacs) where for the second week in succession Paul Harding (aka 'Tip Master') clocked up another win. Using groundbait feeder and maggot his net of ten small roach for a weight of 0-14-13 was enough. With hardly anything separating them Jim Gannon took second place 0-14-10. For those of you that are not familiar with lbs, ounces, and grams, only three separated these two anglers which is just over a tenth of an ounce.

The Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge was also hit by the cold conditions and Jimmy Byrne needed only 1-4-3 made up of tiny roach to take the top money. Derek Bibby was the runner-up with 0-13-10.
