23rd August 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

23rd August, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A report from our stretches of the tiny River Gowy is indeed a rarity but Tony Rough decided to have another visit on Tuesday to the river which is only a short distance from Warrington. An early start did not start off too well as three otters paid a visit to his swim when he was setting up. To his surprise after they moved on the fish started feeding and trotting through a small stick-float and loose-feeding maggot he was soon into some largish gudgeon and plenty of small chub. This river may not be to everyone's taste but that is why we have so many different waters…the old saying holds true 'one man's meat is another man's poison'.

Some bad news from one of our members regarding another small river, the Cain where there has been a fish kill wiping out at least five hundred fish from the confluence with the River Vyrnwy throughout our length. I certainly would expect Natural Resources Wales to come up with the culprit as this stretch has been polluted on a previous occasion some years ago and the polluter pays principle should be applied.

Match organiser Ray Boden was back on his favourite method of pole and maggot when he was the clear winner of Saturdays Mersey Series with 14-2-0 of roach, perch and skimmers. Second placed Jimmy Byrne fished the same method to weigh 8-10-0 of small roach, perch, and chub.

The 'king of the River' aka Ant Higham is back, when he won our Sunday Mersey Series using groundbait feeder and maggot for 7-1-0 of roach and skimmers. Martin Kettle was second catching roach and perch on the pole alternating between maggot and caster.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal saw a new winner on Monday when George Hollis weighed in at exactly 4lbs. He fished the pole for small roach and skimmers to maggot and caster. It's been a long time coming but committee member Graham Belton was in second place with 3-12-2. Small roach dominated the match which although a good sign for the future it initially keeps weights low. Nevertheless it is still competition.

Our rules are clearly printed in our annual membership book and both existing and new members should ensure they read them. There is nothing complicated and they are there to protect fish stocks and members enjoyment of their sport.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.
