16th August 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

16th August, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Good reports from our stretch of the Wyre where an angler describing this stretch as a jewel had a bag of fifty plus roach, dace, and chublets in an afternoon session last week. Our bailiff Neil Buck managed two chub around 4lbs apiece until his session was interrupted by an otter.

Stuart Peters visited our stretch of the Wye where on a low river he was unable to tempt any of the rivers famous barbel but managed five quality chub plus smaller ones until the bites dried up and a flotilla of canoes arrived on the scene. It was then a case of exit stage left.

Our bailiff Steve Daley took his three and a half year old son on a taster session to Statham Pool where in under an hour the youngster caught twenty five small roach. This is an ideal water for a bit of peace and quiet where you are guaranteed to catch.

One of our members wondered if High Legh Fisheries had been stocked well the answer is yes, earlier this year when our netting team thinned out the silver fish stocks on Woodshaw Reservoir where the fish breed like mad. This is an ideal switch-off location where the surroundings are quiet and where you can catch small carp, tench, bream, perch, roach, and rudd. A recent working party on this venue has opened up more or less all the pegs. Another is planned for the near future so if you are interested in finding out where such things are happening join up to our Facebook Volunteers Page.

Martin Kettle fished the bolognaise method on Saturdays Mersey Series to win with 8-10-0 of roach and perch on loose-fed caster. Alan Birchall was in runner-up spot with a similar catch for 7-15-0 taken on Pole and maggot.

Sundays Mersey Series was won by Alan Birchall who moved up a place from his previous day's runner-up position. Alan used the bolognaise method and caster for a cracking catch of 11-2-0 of roach and perch. There's no show without match organiser Ray Boden who was in second place with 9-8-0 using the same method but feeding maggot.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished on the Bridgewater Canal was definitely hard for this time of the year and was won by Jimmy Byrne with one skimmer backed up by small roach for 3-8-8. In joint second were Geoff Brook and Stu Patterson with 3lbs apiece. This stretch has for my money never fished since it was dredged a good number of years ago, before that it was prolific. Common sense should dictate that over the years it would have naturalised again but for whatever reason the fish are simply not there in numbers or quality.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.
