28th June 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

28th June, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Dave Johns enjoyed a short evening session at Appleton Reservoir lasting from 7 to 9pm on Thursday when he landed carp of 20-4-0, 21-0-0, and three lower doubles. The method was a small PVA bag of soft pellet with pellet and fake corm on the hook. Sadly the rigours of spawning has brought about the death of 'The Big one' from this fishery having been found spawn-bound in the margin by members. This previously unknown mirror carp first came to the attention of anglers following its capture in 2012 by Mark Richards at a weight of 32lbs 4ozs. We have no idea how old it was or indeed how it arrived in this fishery but it did herald further carp stocking in this fishery by WAA.

I had a chat to members at Statham Pool this week and they were catching mainly small fish but the place looked stunning and whilst I had my rods in the car I had leave to check the lock that had been reported faulty at High Legh Fishery. Well the lock turned out to be fine but every cloud has a silver lining so armed with an unhooking mat, landing net, my trusty Diawa traveller rod, and half a loaf it was stalking time. The result three single figure but hard fighting mirror carp who slurped in my floating bread as though it was their last meal. Another angler present was catching small tench on float-fished pellet plus at least one carp before I left. It is a bit overgrown at present and any volunteers for a working party would be more than welcome. Please drop me an email or give me a ring if you are interested in giving the place a facelift.

After four hours without a bite at Budworth Mere Steve Brookes was all set to move to another fishery but just then bream starting rolling over his bait. He caught three slabs in three casts and then they were gone. But he 'had the taste' and following a further 3 hours without a bite they returned and he was rewarded with another four of the bronze beauties, all bigger this time.  They are the biggest bream that Steve has ever caught and ranged between 4 and 7lbs.  All fish fell to sweetcorn and ground bait feeder and his trusty old Hardy swing-tip rod. Angling never ceases to be a learning curve and Steve will definitely be making a return visit but armed with a greater quantity of groundbait and corn.

On Friday Carl Harrison and fishing buddy Clive were well pleased with their days fishing at Grey Mist Mere. Carl caught three tench on the first five casts but although the bites slowed down they both managed nine tench apiece. All fell to feeder fished pellet and Clive landed one of our VS Fishery stocked mirror carp as a bonus.

Eric J Smith enjoyed a short session on Cicely on Sunday and fished a method feeder with a couple of dead red maggots on the hook at about 15-20yds feeding hemp over the top.  He caught two bream around 4lb, a couple of tench about the same sort of weight, and 7 crucians. Six of the crucians were over 2lb; the best three weighing in at 2-6-0, 2-9-0 and 2-14-0. Thankfully following bleak reports in the early season other anglers also had good sport with crucians and bream. Eric rates Cicily highly for decent sized crucians but our Woodshaw fishery for quantity.

Match organiser Ray Boden made it his second win on the Mersey by winning our Series Match on Saturday with a net of mainly roach, plus a few perch and a brace of skimmer bream for 9-6-0. Ray fished his favourite pole and maggot method. In runner-up position was Dan Davies who included a bonus 5lbs bream in his catch along with small roach and perch for 6-1-0 taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.

Ant Higham aka The King of the River won our Sunday Series event with 7-9-0 with a catch of eight skimmers plus small roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Martin Lenihan was in second place with 5-13-0

Jimmy Byrne took full advantage of his end peg draw on the Trent & Mersey Canal to clock up another win in our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match with 5-10-0 of roach and skimmers. John Dagnall was in the frame again in second place with 4-7-4.

Our Woodshaw Junior Summer League on Monday also doubled as our Sherratt Cup event that was won decisively Dylan Anglesea with a mixed net taken on Pole and pellet for 12-11-0. Tyler Davies was second with 9-12-0.  A reminder that this weekly series is open to all junior members.

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.
