25th April 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

25th April, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Monday morning there was a pronounced chill in the air at Grey Mist Mere as temperatures dropped following an Indian summer weekend, but the tench were still feeding. Andy Humphries landed three between 4-10-0 and 5-4-0 using red maggots and worms on a feeder/helicopter rig. He lost a larger one at the net when it slipped the hook, frustrating, but that's angling.  One run smashed his hook length before he could even get to the rod!  Whilst not exactly frantic action but where would you rather be on a Monday morning?

Last week I mentioned a double figure bream from the 53acre water at our Association owned Sandiway Lakes, well the fish turned out to be a real specimen, a fish of a lifetime that sent the scales needle round to exactly 15lbs. Plus this week news of a number of tench nudging the 10lbs mark. There have been a few carp caught but unfortunately there are no details that I can mention.

Worthington is definitely on my recommend visit list as it is consistently producing some great sport. Ian Hughes ignored accepted groundbait feeder tactics and fished the slider and maggot over 8 large Jaffa's of groundbait full of hemp, caster, and maggot. It wasn't too long before the roach and skimmers were literally crawling up the rod. His best fish was a bream of about 3.5lbs but size wasn't the issue as it was a nice day and good fishing, and as we all know size doesn't always matter.

Increasingly bailiffs are coming across members (and not all new to WAA) who are infringing our rules stating 'they didn't know'. All the rules are clearly printed in your annual membership book so there is really no excuse whatsoever.

Please note that the Disabled & Over 60's match is cancelled on Bank Holiday Monday but resumes the following week (details below).

Our headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm for new members, subscription and night permit renewals, and any queries. Your catch reports are always welcome, email me details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.

19th April, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished at Daresbury Laboratories this week saw some improvements in weights albeit with the addition of bonus fish for the first two anglers. The winner for the second consecutive week was George Barber had his weight massively improved by a bream of 3.5lbs to which he added just over a pound of small fish for a total of 4-10-8. He fished his usual pole and bread punch method. Second placed George Hollis had a proper specimen that members of the Anguilla Club would have given their high teeth for in the shape of a cracking eel of 3lbs that swelled his catch to 3-4-4. There were good numbers of small roach in some pegs which is great for the future of the canal as large numbers of fish have been wiped out this winter by cormorant predation.

Reports of a double figure bream from the large lake at our Sandiway fisheries. Despite apparently the faster growth rate of carp on the smaller 17.5acre water it does not apply to the bream or tench evidenced by the much larger specimens reported from its 53acre neighbour that go into double figures.

The middle reservoir at Worthington is producing some great sport with roach and bream to groundbait feeder tactics. A few carp also showing but don't forget the small reservoir is closed to angling until the 16th June.

Statham Pool is becoming more popular than ever and is producing some decent roach catches along with the occasional small carp. Worth a visit.

Recent Angling Trust news via email reported that an angler had been reported for the consideration of prosecution for fishing the River Mersey during the coarse fish closed season. Despite me not agreeing with the ninety day closure it is the law and must be obeyed. Our bailiffs are carrying out regular patrols and anyone caught will be reported.

12th April 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes (Addendum)

Agh....missed out on my blog the fact of reports of High Legh Fisheries are extremely muddy and virtually impassible to vehicles until the field dries out.
There is room for a couple of vehicles just before the gate but on no account leave the gate open.

Cheers,

Neil Plunkett leads a charmed life of which I am extremely jealous, yes, he always finds time to go fishing. To quote him, 'spring has sprung' borne out on Tuesday with 9 tench from Grey Mist Mere, most about 5lbs or over. Wednesday 6 carp, best about 10lbs from The Mount at Buckley plus a bonus roach about a 1lb. Saturday, 12 bream and 3 roach at Cicely Mill Pool. Following a well-earned rest on the Sabbath he attacked Rixton the following day, result, and more evidence that spring has indeed sprung came in the shape of 12 bream with the tell-tale wrap round tip bites. But one bite developed into a screaming run and yards of line ripped from the reel before Neil got matters under control resulting in one of our newly stocked commons estimated at 12-13lbs. and the icing on the cake for a spectacular weeks fishing on Warrington waters.

Martin Egan hadn't fished Ackers Pit for a while for on past visits he found it hard going only catching the odd mainly larger fish. It is a fact that cormorants have been at work but there are reed and back pool refuges. However on Sunday's visit he set up for a waggler hemp caster approach and caught from the off with almost every cast resulting in a bite. Many of the fish were net roach and only a very few had strike marks (good news indeed). Martin then fished close in at around two rods distance where he had previously baited-up.  He caught red-fins every put in although a smaller stamp than further out. His days catch was 40-50 fish, who says Ackers is dead!

Mike Pritchard visited Statham Pool this past week and fishing his favourite waggler tactics started off his session fishing with pinkie over depth and was soon into skimmers and hybrids but after losing five carp he changed his tactics. Caster and hemp accounted for between 8 and 9lbs of roach. Happy days.

A few days of warmer weather was followed by three successive heavy frosts that more or less guaranteed another week of poor sport for our Disabled & Over 60's match regulars. George Barber fished pole and bread punch needing only 1-3-8 to take first place, in fact he was the only angler out of the eighteen who fished that broke the 1lb barrier. Dennis bates followed in second place with 0-14-8.

A number of boats within the Sale and Stretford areas have recently been broken into as well as one craft destroyed by a suspected arson attack. If any angler sees anything suspicious please ring the police immediately. Don't forget this is reciprocal as over the years I have received a good number of calls from the boating fraternity relating to possible poachers and illegal fishing.

There is a weed removal work party at Grey Mist Mere on Saturday so if members are on the water between 10am and 4pm there is no fishing during this period. Once the job is done and the water temperature is right we can treat with the Dyofix and hopefully go some way to sorting the problem. So if you fancy something similar to a gentle gym session our team will sort you out and you will be more than welcome. Thanks in anticipation.

6th April 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

One of our members has had a left sided stroke and is finding it difficult to reel in. With the handle changed to the right side he is finding it hard to reel in and control the rod at the same time. Anybody out there who has any helpful ideas please drop me an email.

Adrian Cutler reports catching a Mist mirror of 19-6-0 last week on a chod set-up over almost a kilo of bait. There were a number of leaches showing on his pic but they will diminish as the fish start getting more active.

Steven Brookes has now finished his winter sessions on our River Dane stretch and has been pleased with the results. In eight trips he averaged three fish from this tiny river on each visit, mainly chub around 3lbs but a few four pounders, best weighed 4-12-0. He also had grayling to just under 2lbs which also fell for luncheon meat, but the biggest surprise was a brown trout of 1.5lbs that had a taste for cheese. Steven used a light lead and his trusty John Wilson 12ft Avon rod searching likely fish holding areas and moving from swim to swim.

Bites were a rarity on our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday at Cliffe Lane boats but local ace Jimmy Byrne managed to find a few fish to win with the low weight of 1-13-0. George Barber was the runner-up with 1-5-6. The fish are now tending to spread out leaving their over wintering areas so you really need to draw on fish to have any chance of making the frame.

Our netting team were out again on Sunday on one of our own waters, which is quite a rarity, however our local management team at Woodshaw have for several years been asking for the silver fish stocks to be thinned as numbers had exploded on this small club owned fishery. This exercise when carried out some 10 years ago saw a massive upsurge in growth rates proving the pundits wrong. Anyway the upshot was that on Sunday 250lbs of silver fish were removed and 150lbs released into High Legh Fisheries and 100lbs into Hamptons Pool. Certainly if you are introducing any youngsters to angling High Legh should be on your list to visit. Our management team is looking to soon give Hamptons a makeover so anyone who fancies getting involved please get in touch.

Fish traps have been found at Malpin Pool in Wigan by one of our sharp eyed bailiffs. I would ask all members to immediately report anything suspicious they come across.
