24th November 2015 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

24th November, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The remainder of our carp order is being delivered on Friday 27th November, 2015 kicking off again at Grey Mist Mere around where there will be a small top-up of C4 'black mirror babies' the result of rescued spawn from Colne Mere Lake before it was polluted killing everything including the famous 50lbs black mirror. It would appear that the recent new stock has encouraged the resident carp to start feeding as reports are filtering through of some decent sessions. For those who really do want to help improve their fishery and don't mind a bit of graft there is a working party the following day on the Mist. Meet on car park 10am.

This week I came across Lee Latham and his five year old son Jay who were both enjoying a drop-shotting session on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook. As I chatted to his dad the youngster was expertly casting across to the far bank overhanging bushes and had already caught a perch and a pike. At the final count Lee had three perch to 8oz whereas Jay was on fire ending up with eight perch and two pike and lost a bigger one at the net when the hook pulled out.

Our Saturday Series on the Mersey was cancelled due to adverse conditions but our Christmas Match on Sunday went ahead with nineteen anglers taking part. Bob Clough fished a ground-bait feeder and maggot to catch two skimmers to 1.5lbs along with three roach for a weight of 3-2-0. Norman Gannon fishing the same method had a single skimmer of 1-7-0 in the closing ten minutes and to his dismay lost an even bigger fish. Nevertheless to help both get into the Christmas spirit aside from their cash winnings they each received a 70cl bottle of the amber nectar. Spirits were also shared amongst other competitors.

Following Lenny Dutton's win last week at our Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal the change of venue this week to the Trent & Mersey saw him notch up another albeit shared with fellow angler Alan Brown who had the same weight. The conditions were not ideal and saw anglers really struggling for bites following heavy frost. Lenny and Alan managed to keep ahead of the rest with the lowest winning catch so far this year of 8oz-6drams.

17th November 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

17th November, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our volunteer group at Grey Mist Mere was out again on Saturday despite the miserable weather when they tidied the paths and access. Still more weed to remove to keep on target for dye treatment in March so keep an eye out for working party dates. The Mist is fishable at present where the weed has been removed and I know despite the small number of anglers on the bank a few fish are coming out.

This past few months we have withdrawn memberships from four senior members for flagrant serious breaches of our rules. It is always a last resort and not something the committee or I relish but we simply do not want such people in Warrington Anglers Association where their actions can impact upon decent members. Non-members now poaching our waters stand a real chance of being prosecuted under legislation for theft of fishing rights. In every instance the Police will be called by our bailiffs. People think poaching is a trivial matter but under the Theft Act this is a serious matter and will earn you a criminal record.

I had a trip to Moore Quarry on Monday which was looking spectacular in its autumn colours and ended up chatting to our bailiff Ian Robinson who was on for a night session. A few days previous he landed a 23-8-0 mirror that vanished off the radar after it was stocked two years ago at 19lbs along with 15-8-0 common which after only twelve months in its new home had piled on the pounds and rocketed from its initial 9-8-0 to 15-8-0. There are already some stonking fish but the future is definitely bright with such growth rates reported.

George Barber enjoyed a session on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook over the weekend where fishing pole and punched bread he caught 10lbs of skimmers and roach. I have spotted a few anglers wandering the canal banks spinning or drop-shotting this past week and really fancy christening my new rod which although I ordered it in the winter there was such a huge demand that manufacturers were taken by surprise and I finally received it in the summer. Don't forget if you are using such methods to have your unhooking mat.

On a day when conditions saw weights generally down it was pole power that won the day for match organiser Ray Boden on our Saturday Mersey event with an all roach catch taken on maggot. His net of 4-11-0 narrowly snatched victory away from runner-up Jim Gannon who stuck it out on groundbait feeder tactics to put 4-7-0 on the scales made up of a bonus skimmer, roach, and perch. It is Jimmy's third second place (if that makes sense) in as many weeks.

According to anglers taking part something noxious went into the Mersey which had a dramatic effect to catches on our Sunday match. Martin Lenihan win the event with fifteen tiny eels taken on feeder and maggot tactics for a weight of 1-13-0. Neil Buist was in second place catching eels and a couple of roach for 1-7-0.

Lenny Dutton won our Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal at Keckwick by 'default' with 2-11-0. The story goes that two very experienced match anglers who shall be nameless left their keepnets half in the water unpegged whilst following the weigh-in, one conservatively alleging 4lbs and the other on the next peg 2.5 to 3lbs. It was a shock to both on their return that the drag from the only boat of the day swept had away their catches and when the nets were eventually retrieved they were virtually empty. Second placed Ernie Lea with 2-6-4 was another beneficiary by an extra £ or two from this chain of events.

10th November 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

10th November, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Many thanks to all our members who turned out at such short notice to help our annual stocking of carp into Grey Mist Mere, Moore Quarry, and Sandiway Lakes. There were a few faces that I didn't know but I am sure that they went away suitably impressed by the quality of the V S Fisheries carp.

Our first visit was to Grey Mist Mere where we introduced four C6 fish averaging 20lbs plus fifteen C4's averaging 8.7lbs with a few 9 and 10pounders. All were mirrors.

Next was Moore Quarry where the members were well pleased with six C6's averaging just under 21lbs with the best a common weighing exactly 22lbs. The consensus was to stock only three C4's but the mistake was allowing the guys to choose the fish as we ended up with ten stunning mirrors and one common. It was just like watching kids in a sweet shop, but brilliant to witness and the banter was rife.

The final destination was Sandiway lakes where we released nine C6 fish averaging 19.5lbs with the largest 21-10-0 into the large lake. The small lake where the fish are simply packing on weight received twenty nine C4's that included two commons and one of the progeny of the famous Colnemere black mirror which reached over 50lbs before its death. We have a further twenty of these fish on order. For the record a C4 fish is four summers old and a C6 six. They are the fastest growers and are sorted into sizes annually ultimately being the best of the best of the best etc.

Tim Poultner has certainly kicked off his piking with a good start on the Bridgewater Canal where on his first visit last week he had two fish but on Friday on a different part of the canal he ended up with four on the mat with the same number lost. He only called it a day when he ran out of joey mackerel. All fish were caught on the towpath edge.

Jimmy Byrnes won our Saturday Mersey event for now the third successive week, again he targeted bream using maggot and groundbait feeder tactics. He weighed in three bream to 6lbs along with roach and perch for 14-4-0.  Jim Gannon fished the same method and made it two seconds in as many weeks with 9-15-0.

Stu Hardman had a Sunday match that he will never forget after notching up his first Mersey win for some time in convincing style with 38-10-0 made up of six bream to 4lbs plus a cracking catch of roach. Groundbait feeder and maggot was the method of the day also used by runner-up Paul Hitchen with 14lbs.

What a difference a day makes. With the River Mersey carrying flood water it wasn't so kind to our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday and put paid to any notable catches. Derek Bibby won with 3-3-0 followed by Jimmy Byrne who weighed 2-2-0. Back on the cut next week!

3rd November 2015 Warrington Anglers Guardian Notes

3rd November, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Many thanks to our members who turned out to Offa's Dyke to put the finishing touches to the fence and electric otter deterrent to protect our fish stocks. Without these guys who led what was indeed a brand new project for Warrington Anglers association from start to finish. A steep learning curve maybe but a job well done that without a doubt we will be drawing on that knowledge in the future for other fisheries.

Similarly thanks to the members who turned up at Grey Mist Mere where an improved design weed rake saw our working party volunteers remove even more weed than previously. But getting the weed to the bank is only the start of a lot of hard work to cart it well away from the water's edge. So if you fancy a proper workout watch out for the next working party date.

Jimmy Byrnes walked away with our Saturday event for the second successive week when once again he targeted the bream fishing maggot and groundbait feeder tactics. He ended up with two 5lbs bream with the rest of his winning weight of 13-8-0 made up of roach. Jim Gannon fished the same method and managed to tempt one 5lbs bream plus a decent net of roach for 9-8-0. As these roach pack on weight I reckon that there will be more winning catches of silver fish before too long.

No sooner were my thoughts in type and bingo, it happened a joint first consisting of all roach taken on the pole and my favourite method the stick float. The winning pair were match organiser Ray Boden fishing his preferred method and Dave Hill who trotted down using stick float and maggot for 8-4-0. Alan Birchall came in third place with 7-14-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal and saw seasoned matchman Jimmy Byrne clock up his second win and featuring in the prize money in the previous three matches. Jimmy fished the pole and caster and maggot to catch roach, skimmers, and perch for 5-14-13. Runner-up was Graham Belton with 4-13-0. Eighteen fished with most anglers ending the match with 2lbs plus.
