11th August, 2015 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Andy Baker and his dad Eric fished our stretch of the River Derwent at Darley Abbey on Saturday for the first time and were more than pleased with their day. Andy used a method feeder and double red maggot catch decent sized brown and rainbow trout, dace, and grayling whilst Eric chose the pole and loose-fed maggot throughout taking a similar net of fish but was smashed following a brief encounter with a really big fish. Andy commented,"Definitely worth the drive down there. We will be going again. I might add that this is the first report for some time from this superb WAA owned stretch.
John McIvor took his two grandchildren, six year old Tilly and Archie Seward nine on their very first fishing trip to the tiny but fish packed stretch of the River Alyn where they trotted down a stick float with maggot at the business end. They were both thrilled to catch grayling and trout to a pound and will no doubt never forget their first introduction to our sport. John did explain that fishing is not always that easy but notwithstanding I rather think further trips are on the cards.
Neil Plunkett set himself two new challenges this year, fly fishing, and trying to catch a river barbel but success has been evading him on both counts. However on a trip to the Mount last week for a much needed spot of therapy he reports five carp between about 5 and 8 lbs., 3 nice tench, a bream and a cracking roach over 1.5 lbs.
Although lead shot has been banned for some years now and only the non-toxic variety is available from tackle shops there are no doubt residues lying in the silt of most ponds where either fishing or shooting has taken place. It is very sad when wildlife contrary to the angling practice of conservation is adversely effected by our sport for example the case of swans at Ackers Pit who had ingested lead several weeks ago. The birds could have picked up the lead elsewhere which is more likely due to the pit being de-silted but nevertheless it is a stark warning that tackle should never be discarded.
Connor Croston won our BBQ match which followed on from the Junior Woodshaw Reservoir Series on Monday with the lowest weight of all the previous matches of only 2-10-0. Runner-up was James Brown with 1-9-0. However the BBQ that followed made up for the poor sport when it was rumoured that some ate more than they weighed in the match. Thanks to our team of volunteers without whom the series could not have taken place where every child won a prize.
Weights were down this week on our popular Disabled & Over 60's match at Preston Brook on Monday which was won by Jimmy Byrne with a weight of 3-6-8 of small skimmers and roach. Weights then dropped to almost single figures when Lennie Dutton took second place with 2-1-8.
Martin Lenihan showed how it should be done fishing the pole to take his first win of the season in our Saturday Mersey Series Match with a net of roach and perch using maggot for 8-14-0. Not too far behind was match organiser Ray Boden who is likewise at home with the pole with a similar catch for 8-1-0.
On Sunday there were no teams entered for the Challenge Shield but individual winner Neil Buist fished both the pole and tip to net two bonus skimmer bream to boost his catch of roach and perch weighing in at 10-8-0. Ray Boden took another second place with a net of roach perch, and chub all taken at 9 metres on pole and maggot.
