8th April 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th April 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Swift justice was meted out at our committee meeting this week for the two anglers who were caught on our waters last week fishing at night without a Night Permit. One was banned from our club and his mate banned from night fishing for twelve months. It’s just not worth it.

Many thanks to the volunteers who turned up to the Grey Mist working party last weekend when they removed enough rubbish to fill a large skip from out of the Woolston Cut and hidden around the fishery. There is still peg repair work and fallen trees to be removed so we will be looking at a day closure following the Easter Holiday. This is one of the North Wests’ iconic fisheries and our members are determined it stays that way.

Phil Hancox initiated his newly joined mate Ian McCarthy to the joys of Grey Mist Mere tench fishing on Friday. They shared a twenty fish catch with Ian breaking his PB on three consecutive casts and the best fish weighed out at 5-8-0 with Phil also adding two carp of 13 and 14lbs for good measure. All fell to maggot feeder tactics with two on the hook. Phil made a return morning visit on Monday and in his haste left his maggots at home. He improvised with a method feeder and sweetcorn to end his session with five tench from 5lbs to 6-14-0 plus a common of 14lbs.

Neil Plunkett enjoyed both his best and worst ever sessions in the space of a week. Last week on Grey Mist he had his best ever tench session netting nine olive beauties between 5 and 6.5lbs and lost three in a snag. Whereas early this week he fished at our new Offa’s Dyke Fishery and blanked with no movement of the float whatsoever. That’s fishing for you. More reports needed from this fishery please.

Young member Lewis Harmes landed two carp of 10-2-0 and a smaller fish of 6lbs from our Mount fishery at Buckley. Our local management team are currently looking at opening up more of this fishery which has been adversely affected by high water conditions. And a reminder that there is no night fishing due to the resultant shortage of pegs until this is resolved.

John Arkwright made his new member debut on Rixton Claypits this last week and was well pleased with his catch of a dozen decent bream plus a tench of 3.5lbs. All fell to his method feeder and pellet approach.

Our first and what turned out to be the last round for this year of the Supercup Competition took place on Saturday at Border Fisheries between Bay Malton and our Warrington Red Team. Although both teams drew on points Bay Malton comfortably beat us in a count up on weight. They were worthy winners and our team wish them every success in the competition. The next day our Blue Team battled it out against Lymm AC in the same competition on their Chester Lakes Fishery. The result was more decisive at 16 points to our 8 so well done to Lymm and our team wish them success in their next round of the competition.

George Barber weighed in 5-1-0 of roach and small skimmers in our weekly Disabled & Over 60’s match held on Monday on the Bridgewater Canal.  It proved to be a decisive win and doubled Lennie Dutton’s runner-up weight of 2-4-0.

Please note that Woodshaw Reservoir is closed until 3pm on Saturday 12th April for a Junior inter-team CADG match.

Also there is a working party on Sunday 13th April at Moore Quarry so the fishery is closed. Any member who fancies helping build and improve the pegs just turn up on the day around 10am and you will be more than welcome.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
