8th April 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Well done to our Woodshaw Junior Team on Saturday who added another CADG Series win to their previous one at Boggatt Hole Clough. This time they were on home ground at Woodshaw Reservoir and ended the match with a tie on 7 points with Ramsbottom but narrowly won the day on a weight count back by just under a kilo. Jake Parkinson topped the individual leader board.
Many thanks to the volunteers who turned up to both Moore Quarry and the Mount working parties on Sunday which enabled a lot of essential improvement work was done on both fisheries. On the quarry the group which included several new members installed four cracking pegs with another couple planned. My sympathies definitely went to the two guys on the rock-pile who were virtually mining the stuff to infill the pegs from a load we had delivered a couple of years ago. The Mount team built a new peg within the flooded area plus cleared overhanging trees to create a number of new fishing areas.
Neil Plunkett fished the small Lake at Sandiway on Sunday and following a not too good previous result when he targeted large fish he decided to change his tactics. He scaled down his end tackle to a finer hook-length and 16's hook with double red maggot and used both a groundbait or maggot feeder tactics. Thirteen was lucky in his case as he ended his session satisfied with exactly that number of prime roach to 1lb. This small lake is also producing more carp action, albeit much smaller fish than the adjacent much larger sister fishery, but I am informed that a few quality fish have been caught.
Phil Hancox couldn't get a peg on Grey Mist Mere so made a swift deviation to nearby Rixton Claypits where using a groundbait feeder and sweetcorn hook bait he ended his short morning session with fifteen bream all around 1.5lbs plus one tench around the 4lbs mark.
Derek Bibby weighed in 5-1-12 to win our weekly Disabled & Over 60's match held on the Bridgewater Canal on Monday. In a hard match where bites were scarce he was helped massively by a bream of 4lbs to which he added a few silver fish. Match organiser John Dagnall was fourth (I have to mention him because it is so rare that he frames).
The Appleton Reservoir Mini-Festival was won by Kev Green who first floated the idea with a combined weight of 26-8-0. A number of carp were caught during the event but were weighed and returned to the water immediately. The roach shoals proved to be conspicuous by their absence despite being caught in good numbers during practice sessions.
A reminder to all members that all Association owned fisheries are strictly private property and anyone found with non-members on their pegs will risk losing their membership. Similarly only those members with night permits who are booked on are allowed on our waters at night, definitely no unauthorised visitors. Likewise no dogs are allowed under any circumstances.
Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
