28th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Paul Edwards had a good afternoon session on our stretch of the River Ribble on Friday when after setting up two rods, one upstream and the other downstream it was the latter which took four barbel including two doubles of 10-8-0 and 12-5-0. He was using a feeder packed with halibut pellet groundbait with a hair-rigged 14mm pellet at the business end. The river was dropping but was still 4 or 5feet above normal level but this did not seem to put the fish off as he had a fish on his first cast. To quote Paul "without doubt this river is the best water on the WAA book....I just wish it was a bit closer to home."
There were some good catches in our WAA winter league Stu Hardman fishing for Black Claggers put together a winning mixed net for 9-8-6 closely followed by George Barber fishing for Assi with 9-6-2. In fact there were three weights over 9lbs which looks good on paper but when you consider Jimmy Byrne needed only 6oz to win his section on Moore Boats and Phil Cross on the Toast Rack only 1-2-4 for his section it shows the fish were tightly shoaled. The current overall league leader at present by 7points is Warrington Red, but it is definitely not a foregone conclusion.
George Barber was in the money again this week when he won our Disabled & Over 60's match with 6-14-14 taken on pole-fished maggot near Houghs Bridge. He was 2lbs clear of Pete Critchley who is getting consistent results with his pole-fished chopped worm technique. Pete caught roach and perch for 4-13-2.
Our Mersey Series was won by Eddie Frangleton who admittedly although he doesn't fish these matches too often he usually frames. He was in the money on this occasion with 6-6-12 consisting of a couple of bream and small roach taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot.
The Baileys Tackle Pike Match Series was switched to the Mersey on Sunday and although there were only three fish caught, most important was the fact that they have now opened their score sheet on the river. Steve Mercer was a clear winner with just under 14lbs.
I would remind all members that salmon are not allowed to be taken until the 16th June and then only if that person holds a National Rod Licence Salmon Permit. Any person catching a salmon must return it immediately. Ignorance of the law is no excuse.
I would welcome any catch reports either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm every Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
