14th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th February 2012 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

With an increasing number of our canals and Stillwater fisheries becoming free of ice anglers are starting to think about a fishing session. Our disabled & over 60's match organiser on Monday managed to find a section of the Bridgewater Canal at Moore large enough to accommodate the hardy regulars. The fish were as expected tightly shoaled but local rod Jimmy Byrne put a mixed net of roach and skimmers on the scales for just over 5lbs followed by Mike Daniels with 3-14-2. Both fished the pole alternating between bread and pinkie. OK some anglers really struggled and did not weigh but at least the match took place.

Our Honorary and over 65's match organiser Stan Charnock has retired after a good number of years successfully running these events. So publically on behalf of everyone a big thank you to him for what he has done that on occasions can seem a thankless task. Hopefully he will now be able to spend more time actually fishing. The good news is that Cheshire Anglings John Dagnall has stepped into the breach and volunteered to run the matches including the John Lavery Series alongside his events. The only change is that they will in future be held on a Monday, but anglers who qualify can fish two matches in one from the same peg if they so wish. Should be very interesting indeed.

The Mersey match on Sunday saw a slight improvement in sport, although nothing really to write home about but a first time win on the river for Peter Jones with 1-3-0 of roach caught on a maggot feeder. He was followed by Anthony Higham with 1-2-3 on the same method. I understand that a few small pike are showing at the Woolston end of the river behind Grey Mist.

New member Mark Davies was chomping at the bit to get out on our fisheries for a session but due to the freeze was forced into a river session on the Alyn. It was his first ever go at trotting a stick-float but his loose fed maggots soon attracted some interest and he caught 12 grayling to around 12oz, 4 feisty brown trout and a salmon parr. His three hour session proved to be a pleasant afternoon out and his first ever grayling to boot!

New members can join in person at any of our tackle shop licence depots as advertised on our website and club card. They can also join at our HQ, by post to PO Box 71 Warrington WA1 1LR, or online by Paypal at www.warrington-anglers.org.uk
