5th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
The famous Cicily Mill Pool common made an appearance on Tuesday to junior member Andrew Lamb aged 14years. The fish was witnessed by his uncle Jeff Mowbray who has also caught this fish on two previous occasions. This thirty has reportedly died on a number of occasions only to reappear is the original 'come-back kid' and although down a bit on weight was in magnificent condition. Congratulations Andrew.
Paul Floyd had a two night session on Rixton Claypits last week and caught his personal best roach at 1-6-0. The fish fell to single red maggot presented on a size 18 hook. Paul also had tench and bream, the latter were like peas in a pod and ranged from 4-8-0 to 5-4-0 and fell to 8mm red halibut pellets. He followed this up with a trip to Grey Mist Mere and had four tench, best 6-7-0. A report that one of our junior members caught Mist veteran 'Hector' at 27lbs over the weekend is promising.
Carp are starting to show at Phoenix Park Lake with a few reported caught over this past weekend. However it is the bream that are on the feed according to bailiff's reports as one angler had fifteen in a day session on Saturday. The fish fell to boilies and pva bags of pellets. A few tench averaging 4lbs but good roach sport to maggot at 4 to 5metres.
Congratulations to Honorary Member, Harry Yates who won the first prize of £200 in our stocking fund draw, however he promptly donated it back to be used for junior angling. An octogenarian Harry recognises the vital importance of attracting more youngsters to the sport that he has enjoyed as a WAA member. He has held a membership since the age of four.
The final match of our Warrington Local Winter League was won by Neil Buist in impressive style with 16-13-0 of bream on bread punch. However his arch rival Jimmy Byrne sabotaged a double win taking the overall championship with 44 points against his 42. Warrington Red triumphed in the team championship both on the day and overall with 149 points against Cheshire Anglings 137. Thanks to Ivan & Corrine mine hosts at the Star, Statham for putting up with us and kindly providing the buffet.
The larger pool at High Legh Fisheries has been hit by a plague of cormorants which have reportedly almost wiped out the fish stocks. With the help of members we are currently assessing the situation on this popular fishery. I hope that the Environment Minister, the Rt. Hon. Richard Benyon addresses this problem sooner than later because these birds now feed on inland water throughout the year and once they home in on a fishery have a devastating effect on native fish populations. Currently the only viable solution is to stock with carp of a size too large for them to swallow.
Please keep sending in your catch reports whatever they are, good, bad, or indifferent, as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for 2011 night permits and new memberships.
