19th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

On Saturday I managed to get hold of Stephen Robinson, the captor of the now famous Grey Mist 10-5-0 eel and get the full story. This fish of a lifetime has really set the eel world alight as it is one of only a handful of doubles ever reported and only 12ounces off the record. This leviathan was caught at 2-20am, not as reported in my previous column on double red maggot during a daytime session, and was actually tempted by a fish-meal boilie fished hard on the bottom. The eel put up a mega fight, and getting it into the landing net proved even more difficult, but eventually it was weighed and witnessed.  It was not photographed because as this was Stephens first ever eel he just did not realise its significance and was definitely overawed by the sheer size and power of this fish of a lifetime.

Just for the record Richard Munns, the angler witnessing the capture also had an eel of around 6lbs the same week on the exact same bait plus a number of tench which also have a liking for these potent 'secret boilies'. Only a few carp showing but pleasingly a mixture of both older and new fish. One angler had eighteen tench on feeder and double maggot in a morning session.

Sandiway small lake is still giving good sport with members Richard Pierce and Wictor Fieutec sharing a catch of sixteen tench to 6.5lbs, two bream around the same weight, and three mirrors with two biggest weighing in at 22-5-0 and 22-10-0.

Our stretch of the Trent & Mersey Canal at Broken Cross really came on form for the Spring League with the first three anglers having double figure nets of plump roach. Match veteran Jimmy Byrnes put 14-4-0 of punch bread fish on the scales to take the winner's purse; following almost 3lbs adrift was Jeff Shaw with 11-10-0. With sport like this on tap it makes our membership prices look an absolute bargain.

Pass the word round that on Sunday 8th May 2011our popular Pike Anglers Club teach-in event takes place this year between 10am and 2pm at Grey Mist Mere. There is no charge and it is open to non-members.

Please keep sending in your catch reports as they are invaluable. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ Parker Street is now open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for 2011 subscriptions, new memberships, and any queries.
