26th April, 2011 Warrington Guardian Notes

26th April 2011 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

The Bridgewater Canal bream are still in a feeding frenzy as they stock up on nutrients prior to spawning which could be earlier this year due to the warmer weather. Ross Whiteman with his son Jack fished pole and caster taking bream to 5lbs and shared a twenty three fish catch. It is always a mystery but generally these fish just vanish after spawning to be replaced in catches by smaller skimmers.

Robert Barton made a return visit to Wide Hole after a somewhat lengthy gap of thirty years and was really impressed with the improvement in sport being kept busy with bream ranging from 1 to 3lbs. The successful method was waggler and corn but a change of bait to luncheon meat saw his float slide under yet again but this time it was definitely not a bream. After a tackle testing fight a mirror carp of 17-2-0 lay in his landing net.

New member Carl Wadsworth had his best ever tench taken on his first ever visit to a Warrington Anglers fishery. Legered pop-up corn tempted the specimen, although he was so overawed by its sheer size that he forgot to weigh it! Not so junior member Miss Jez Lloyd who tempted her tench which weighed in at 6-9-0 on hair-rigged fake corn. A few carp being caught but tench sport is really on fire.

Worthington Lakes are producing a few carp but it is the roach and bream that are proving the best sport. Small groundbait feeder and red maggot seems to be the best method. Don't forget Adlington (the smallest) Reservoir is closed to fishing until the 16th June.

Woodshaw Reservoir is definitely worth a visit according to our bailiff Trevor Gray as tench to 4lbs, crucians, and bream are devouring any bait presented to them. Even so I understand that pellets just have the edge.

Bailiff Mike Monks reports that carp to 3lbs and silver fish are being caught on most baits at Ackers Pit although he has asked me to mention that floating baits are not the most sensible bait to use with so many wildfowl present on the water and also that only barbless hooks may be used.

Our popular Pike Anglers Club teach-in event takes place on Sunday 8th May 2011 between 10am and 2pm at Grey Mist Mere. There is no charge and it is open to non-members.
