4th May 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It was a pleasure to watch member Dave Iceton give a class demonstration of distance waggler fishing at Ackers Pit on Thursday evening putting to shame two well known anglers who shall remain anonymous. Loose feeding maggot Dave had a mixed catch of roach, rudd, and perch including tench to 1lb which were only stocked over 12 months ago at 3 to 4ozs. A regular he averages 25 to 30 fish a session. A few crucians also reported. I am really pleased that anglers are back on this fishery and catching after a long absence. Work is ongoing to establish marginal aquatic plant growth which will eventually improve not only the visual aspect but also your sport.

Keith McCulley who has been a member of WAA for forty seven years was certainly pleased with his biggest fish from our waters to date when he banked a mirror of 27lbs exactly from Grey Mist Mere. The fish was in excellent condition and fell for Alpha Baits monster crab boilies. The only down side was that as he set up his camera shot his batteries died. More good news is that thanks to members we have now identified the two anglers responsible for taking two pike as reported in my column last week.

Bank Holiday Monday saw Cicely Mill specialist Jeff Mowbray on the bank side at his favourite fishery targeting the carp population. On this occasion he sent me some great pictures of a mirror of 21-3-0 which he has now caught three times. Not to be outdone his nephew, junior member Andrew Lamb had a 9-4-0 common. Plenty of tench now showing and Ian Smythe reports catching a crucian of 4-2-0 on ledgered red worm.

Pheonix Park Lake at Runcorn was packed over the Bank Holiday weekend and understandably so as the sport at present is exceptional. Over twenty carp have been out this weekend, best 17-8-0. Our bailiffs report members catching bream and tench both to 8lbs with phenomenal roach and skimmer action fishing the short pole with maggot and caster. Night permit holders please note only one night is allowed on this fishery which must be pre-booked.

Mike Burdock our local bailiff at Wide Hole reports good bream catches with fish to 3lbs most sporting their full spawning nodules. The Dynamic Duo comprising Ernie Hutchinson and Dickie Wernham even paid a visit with the latter as I understand it having the better catch and losing a really good fish, more likely a carp on light tackle. Jason Crisp also got amongst the bream with all fish being returned to the water immediately.

Tench to 5lbs plus bream to 6lbs and skimmers reported from Rixton Claypits, although carp anglers are stressed somewhat by the numbers of skimmers with committee member Ian Clutterbuck reporting catching one of 6ozs that took double boilie on a 4's hook. It looks likely that we can expect a bream bonanza in the next year or so. A word of warning to members who are placing neatly bagged rubbish by our cabin please take it home, it's yours and we definitely do not want it. Our bailiffs are not responsible for removing your litter but certainly will relieve those responsible of their membership books.

Please continue sending in your catch reports as they are valuable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, night permits, and new memberships (these can also be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk )
