11th May 2010 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Our popular Junior Summer Series starts again on Monday 17th May, draw 6pm at Euclid Avenue all welcome. The Minnows starts the following Tuesday 25th May draw time/place same as above. Further details from Helen Dagnall on 01925 635486.

Regular contributors to this column Ernie Hutchinson and his mate Dickie Wernham aka the 'dynamic duo' report some decent sport on our Macclesfield Canal fishery at Congleton wharf. Fishing with waggler and alternating between caster and maggot both had a good mixed net of bream, skimmers, perch, and gudgeon. The roach which are usually the main species are obviously spawning as they were absent save for one solitary fish.

It was a similar tale on our weekly Disabled & Over 60's match on the Bridgewater Canal where Barry Owen put 5-8-3 of skimmers and perch on the scales to take the top spot. Only ounces separated the next three in the money but the common theme was the absence of roach.

Rixton Claypits is exactly the same with skimmer bream dominating most catches although anglers targeting the tench report fish to over 6lbs. After weighing a few fish Brian Jones reckons that he had well over 40lbs in his dozen fish all taken on legered hair rigged corn.

Just when I thought that nothing was happening at Moore Quarry I have been told by a reliable source today that the fabled 'forty' has been out again, but this time with a slight increase at 41lbs. You can say or think what you like but this fish has been out previously both weighed and witnessed.

A few members have contacted me regarding the sudden explosion of weed on Grey Mist Mere which at the moment is confined to the car park half of the fishery. The weed is curled pondweed (Potomogeton crispus) and the EA have been contacted regarding effective control methods. Currently tench are still the main species being caught and on my Saturday visit I spoke to two anglers who were fishing maggot but regularly catching tench plus a carp of 21lbs which certainly put some strain on the lighter tackle.

Martin James is looking for volunteers to help in the ongoing planting work at Ackers Pits. The idea is to eventually have an established bed of aquatic plants between each peg which will not only stabilise the bank but give cover to fish and more importantly mop up the nutrients helping to control algal growth. Interest? Please give me a ring.

Please continue sending in your catch reports as they are valuable to both your fellow members and your committee. Contact me either by phone Tel 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk.

HQ Parker Street is open as usual on Friday evening between 7 & 9pm for subscriptions, night permits, and new memberships (these can also be purchased from any of our tackle shop outlets listed on our website www.warrington-anglers.org.uk )
