18th July 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tim Poulter just missed the blog last week; Tim had made a visit to the river Gowy which we get very few reports about. He chose a swim just above the weir where he could see Roach milling around, well it didn`t take long before he was catching on maggot hook baits. He finished his session with a dozen small Roach and one Chub, he did report the banks overgrown which is to be expected on a wild river.

Ken Hewitt was out a couple of times this week, his first choice was the river Mersey. Ken fished float fished maggot to tempt 9 Roach, but it will be a struggle now as all our rivers need a good amount of water. Next up was Ackers Pit, but despite trying multiple baits and constantly adjusting his setup he couldn`t get a bite. He did however comment on the work that was being conducted on the pegs and gave praise to our volunteers.

Andy Corr visited our stretch of the Weaver navigation where fishing float fished maggot over ground bait he put a lovely net of Roach, Perch, Dace, and Skimmers together. Unfortunately, his session was cut short by the inevitable swimmers that descend on to our waters as soon as the sun comes out. A word of advice if this happens to when you`re out please inform the police and state you are concerned about their safety, don`t forget to ask for an incident number and email to your secretary.

This week`s Mersey match held on the Mersey walk stretch had a good turnout of twenty-one anglers despite the predicted hot weather. Most anglers struggled with the low water and hot bright conditions with only 8lbs needed to take top spot when Harry Billing just edged out Mersey veteran Jeff Shaw by 2oz. All of the anglers that framed did so using various float fished baits.

The Bridgewater match was a bit of a torrid affair, match organiser Jimmy Byrne reports the fishing was tough and although they were shaded by trees it was still warm work at 37 degrees. Alan Brown won with Roach and Perch to 4oz, Chris Wray in the money again from his third place on the Mersey went one better and finished second with a similar catch. Jimmy Byrne and George Barber made up the last two places only 9ozs separated the top four anglers.

There is a regatta on the Mersey this weekend so it would be advisable to avoid the Victoria Park section as to avoid getting disturbed.
