26th July 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Regular contributors to the blog Ken Hewitt & Dave Gardner were out again this time on Grey Mist, Dave`s catch totalled fifteen fish of which twelve were Roach to 10 oz and 3 Perch to 12 oz. His successful method was waggler and pole fished mixed maggots. Ken only managed seven fish, 5 Perch to 4 oz & 2 Roach to 6 oz on float fished mixed maggots. Both anglers tried fishing method and cage feeder, but both failed to get bites.

Stephen Spann had a session on the Weaver Navigation this past week, he reports he had a nice morning catching several nice Perch, an 8 oz Skimmer and a couple of Dace. The fishing slowed when the rain arrived and he also suffered several hook pulls, Stephen fished red maggot over ground bait.

This week`s Mersey match held on the Mersey walk stretch saw twenty-three anglers turn up with high hopes of good weights because of the recent rain in the week. The influx of fresh water put twelve more inches on the river level and undoubtedly a bit more oxygen too, so the stage was set. Well, it wasn`t to be the match did not fish well and made more difficult by a sudden level drop of approximately two feet. This resulted in anglers repositioning their nets etc and trying to contend with the conditions with some having to concede and cease fishing, but for those that persevered fish were to be had although it was difficult fishing. Match organiser Al Faulkner fishing peg sixty-three came out on top fishing pole and maggot using various rigs to keep fish coming. Roy (The Cobra) Everson fishing his first match of the season was close in second place losing out on top spot by just 1oz fishing the same method. Bob Clough was third followed by ever consistent Harry Billing taking the last placing all fished similar methods.

The Bridgewater canal match this week was won by John Ashwin who drew to the left of the bridge on Delph Lane, Roach, and perch plus a bonus 3lbs Bream boosted his weight to 4lbs 4oz. George Barber aka the bread man fished to the right of the bridge by the stickups to claim second place. Pete Jones had quality Roach by George Gleaves Bridge and filling the fourth spot was match organiser Jimmy Byrne with a couple of Skimmers and 40 Roach.

18th July 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tim Poulter just missed the blog last week; Tim had made a visit to the river Gowy which we get very few reports about. He chose a swim just above the weir where he could see Roach milling around, well it didn`t take long before he was catching on maggot hook baits. He finished his session with a dozen small Roach and one Chub, he did report the banks overgrown which is to be expected on a wild river.

Ken Hewitt was out a couple of times this week, his first choice was the river Mersey. Ken fished float fished maggot to tempt 9 Roach, but it will be a struggle now as all our rivers need a good amount of water. Next up was Ackers Pit, but despite trying multiple baits and constantly adjusting his setup he couldn`t get a bite. He did however comment on the work that was being conducted on the pegs and gave praise to our volunteers.

Andy Corr visited our stretch of the Weaver navigation where fishing float fished maggot over ground bait he put a lovely net of Roach, Perch, Dace, and Skimmers together. Unfortunately, his session was cut short by the inevitable swimmers that descend on to our waters as soon as the sun comes out. A word of advice if this happens to when you`re out please inform the police and state you are concerned about their safety, don`t forget to ask for an incident number and email to your secretary.

This week`s Mersey match held on the Mersey walk stretch had a good turnout of twenty-one anglers despite the predicted hot weather. Most anglers struggled with the low water and hot bright conditions with only 8lbs needed to take top spot when Harry Billing just edged out Mersey veteran Jeff Shaw by 2oz. All of the anglers that framed did so using various float fished baits.

The Bridgewater match was a bit of a torrid affair, match organiser Jimmy Byrne reports the fishing was tough and although they were shaded by trees it was still warm work at 37 degrees. Alan Brown won with Roach and Perch to 4oz, Chris Wray in the money again from his third place on the Mersey went one better and finished second with a similar catch. Jimmy Byrne and George Barber made up the last two places only 9ozs separated the top four anglers.

There is a regatta on the Mersey this weekend so it would be advisable to avoid the Victoria Park section as to avoid getting disturbed.

12th July 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

This week, Tony Baron had a session with his mate on the Dee at Shocklach where fishing float and red maggot he had a few Grayling, weighing up to a pound along with 7 Chub from 8ozs to 1lbs of course the obliging Trout put in an appearance. His mate also had a similar catch but included Chub to 2lbs.

Phil McKracken took his son for a visit to our Ackers Pit fishery and were not disappointed when Phil`s son landed a hard fighting 6lbs 2oz Mirror Carp and a few quality Roach which I`m sure he won`t forget in a hurry.

Kev Brindles choice of venue was Statham Pool, fishing the waggler with red maggot, corn & pellet he helped himself to a good Bream, loads of Roach and an Eel.

Regular contributor to the blog Phil Brown who is no stranger to our Rixton fishery fished with corn & meat under a float rig close in and ended his session with 12 Bream and 2 dozen Roach. Phil fished his hook bait over a bed of silver x & exploding fish ground bait.

Ken Hewitt chose the Kingsway stretch of the mighty Mersey and the conditions couldn`t have been much worse, float fishing with maggots with the sun blazing on a low & clear river he managed 9 Roach before stopping for the day. Ken also tried the feeder approach but with no success on this method.

This week`s Mersey Match saw the return of some old Face`s to the river, and it was one of these that took the honours. Rod Fraser put together a lovely net of fish from peg 22, starting on the feeder Rod managed a few skimmers in the 1st hour before switching to the pole. Here he added a mixture of silvers to pip Jim Gannon to top spot after Jim had lost a 2lbs fish at the net. A Brown and Neil Buist battled it out for 3rd & 4th on weir lane.

Rod Fraser and A Brown were once again in the money but only as runner`s up on the Bridgewater when Dean Loftus edged them out of top spot. Fishing end peg Dean had on his debut managed 6lbs 13ozs of Roach up to 8ozs from opposite the Barn owl pub. John Ashwin also in the frame again following an early Bream and backup Roach gave him 4th.

5th July 2022 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Scott Broadhurst decided to spend a morning on Rixton this week, in between missing bites due to the amount of wildlife he was watching he managed a nice net of fish. Float fishing sweetcorn, he managed 2 Bream, 1 Tench and a load of Roach.

Wayne Stuart-Cole embarked on a trip to what must be his favourite River, the mighty Ribble. Having been out fishing with Wayne in the past I'm sure he would have been in search Barbel. He set up his 40-year-old rod with a 16mm Halibut pellet on a running ledger rig with some free offerings but unfortunately, he was to end his session with only one Chub but a nice one at 5lbs 4ozs. Better luck next time Wayne I`m sure it won't be too far away.

Gregg James has sent a report in this week from Appleton Reservoir which made me re-read his report more than a couple of times. Fishing an Orange Norther special on a bed of particles he landed four carp with the biggest a Mirror carp of 42lbs 2ozs using his own words I never even knew fish of that size were in there. Staying with Appleton, Phillip Brown also had a session this week fishing at 40/50 meters with corn hook bait he managed to snare two carp both around the 15lbs mark with 20 Roach up to 1lbs 8oz on float fished corn close in.

This week`s Match on the Bridgewater saw Paul Ashton travel across from Manchester to demonstrate how to catch Skimmers for the locals using worm & caster opposite Daresbury Laboratory, second on the day was Ron Durr who also caught Skimmers but of a smaller size. Geoff Brookes took the third place with a Skimmer and twenty backup Roach & Perch.

This week`s Mersey match was held on Mersey Walk; this is where Neil Buist AKA The Engine just manage to edge out myself by 10ozs when he placed 10lbs 3ozs on the scales. Both Neil and I had similar nets of Skimmers, Roach, Perch and Dace, my switch to fishing the last 40 minutes on the feeder for a Bream nearly paid off until the hook pulled from what felt like a decent and only fish in that period. Harry Billing had a lovely net of mainly Roach for third.

*Please note carp are starting to spawn on some lakes DO NOT cast to these fish and do not cross or remove tape that is there to prevent you fishing or you will be dealt with by the Management Committee*
