14th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Local rod John Garry had a reasonable session on Woodshaw Reservoir on Friday with fifty-two small roach on pole and bread punch. Two days later another Woodshaw regular Joe Garry couldn't even buy a bite. However, a few roach around 12ounces were coming out on Monday. That's fishing at this time of the year.

Mike Pritchard fished his usual session on Saturday choosing the Bridgewater Canal as the River Mersey didn't look too promising with the prevailing high-water conditions. After a biteless hour and a half he decided to move swims and started catching very small roach on pinkie close to the bank, eventually going across where he had been feeding another swim to catch a 10oz roach on his first cast but then nothing. He ended up with 2.5lbs of very tiny roach plus the one better stamp fish, but he was out enjoying his sport made more pleasurable watching kingfishers trying their luck.

The Mersey Match on Sunday was understandably a grim affair with the river levels very high and trees floating past anglers as they fished. Roy Everson was the winner with sixteen small roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 1-7-0. Paul Field retained his claim on the runner-up spot from last week's match with 1-3-0 taken using the same method. Despite the conditions seventeen anglers fished including one newcomer who forgot his wellies, a mistake he will not repeat as the river came over a number of pegs his included.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Christmas Prize match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge. The canal was highly coloured again but there were a few more bites to be had and everyone caught. Winner Ron Durr fished the pole alternating between bread punch and pinkie to end up with mainly roach plus a couple of perch for 2-12-0. Neil (The Engine) Buist took second place with 2-11-0. The seventeen anglers who fished all received prizes.

Ian Brody has organised a working Party at Rixton Claypits on Sunday starting a 9am but it won't be an all-day affair. Ian asks if you have any tools bring them along. All welcome.
