28th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

28th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Michael White has been out this week; on Monday he managed a couple of small perch from Worthington Lakes and the next day he was back on the Bridgewater canal lure fishing and landed decent sized perch or as he described 'a nice lump.' With the high numbers of small silvers in the canal the future bodes well for predator anglers.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match took place this week on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery at Wigan. The expectation was some bigger weights than the previous week on the Bridgewater Canal but the fourteen members who fished arrived to find that the water was gin-clear, not a good sign. Winner Alan Brown fished the pole to catch forty small roach, mainly on bread punch and a few on pinkie for a weight of 2-9-0. Local rod, Jonny Johnson took the runner-up spot with 1-13-0. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne actually won his section with 3oz! Ironically two pleasure anglers turnup up and fished for a couple of hours during the match, they only had one fish between them, a 3lbs chub and easily enough to have won the match!

The Mersey Match Series which had been moved to Tuesday was fished on the Mersey Walk area pegs didn't fayre much better with match organiser Alan Faulkner needing only 2-6-0 from peg 46 to top the sixteen anglers who took part. He set-up a tip-rod fishing maggot close-in for twenty small roach and a couple of perch. Ade Green was pegged on the opposite end of the match and fishing the same method put 1-15-0 of small roach on the scales to take second place.

Thanks to the members who turned out for Mondays working party on Big Sandiway. Again, lots of essential jobs done.

Ian Brody has organised another working Party at Rixton Claypits on Sunday 9th January starting a 9am. Any help is appreciated if just for an hour or so. All welcome.

Our WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street, Warrington WA1 1LT remains closed on Friday evenings but members can simply post to this address or put their book or request in an envelope with their payment and a stamped addressed envelope, through our HQ door where mail is collected and dealt with most days. 21st December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

A report of cracking pike catches from Big Sandiway a couple of weeks ago when Graham Lane and Mike Williams both fishing dead baits kicked off their session at 6am. By the end of the day, they had landed seven fish between them with two or three evading capture. Mike ended up with the biggest at 15lbs plus but Graham wasn't far behind with beautifully marked fish of 14lbs. One of the fish, a seven pounder had almost become a meal for a much larger fish as it had several serious bite marks. How big do they go in the lake is the burning question as there is a plentiful supply of silvers to keep up their growth rate.

This time of the year is loved by anglers targeting both perch and pike and a member trying his luck at Wide Hole last week struggled with just small perch as he stated, "lurking around." But within ten minutes of casting into the main run of the canal a few better-quality perch started to show resulting some half decent stripeys in his landing net.

With the river running at a fair pace the Mersey Match on Sunday was another one where bites were in short supply. After a few weeks out of the frame match organiser Jimmy Byrne was more than happy to clock up another win with a net of thirty roach plus a few perch for a weight of 5-1-0. They were all caught using on a small groundbait feeder and red maggot at a distance of 15metres. Steve Lewis was in second place fishing the same method with twenty roach for 2-14-0. Seventeen anglers fished. Please note there is no match next Sunday but it has been rearranged for Tuesday 28th December 2021.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge. The canal had lost a lot of its colour so there were expectations that a few more bites were on the cards. John Ashwin took his first win of the year with a net of roach for 2-12-0, the best few fish coming in the last hour using both bread and pinkie. Alan Brown was the runner-up with 2-3-0. Fifteen anglers fished.

Both working parties last week at Sandiway Lakes and Rixton Claypits saw valuable improvements carried out by our small bands of volunteers for the benefit of their fellow members. It would be nice if a few new faces came forward and helped….. it may be stating the obvious but the work would be done so much quicker and I'm betting that anyone volunteering would enjoy all the banter and camaraderie. We are looking to carry out improvements to car parking and pegs at Wide Hole so if anyone feels that they can help with the works please do not hesitate to get in touch.

14th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Local rod John Garry had a reasonable session on Woodshaw Reservoir on Friday with fifty-two small roach on pole and bread punch. Two days later another Woodshaw regular Joe Garry couldn't even buy a bite. However, a few roach around 12ounces were coming out on Monday. That's fishing at this time of the year.

Mike Pritchard fished his usual session on Saturday choosing the Bridgewater Canal as the River Mersey didn't look too promising with the prevailing high-water conditions. After a biteless hour and a half he decided to move swims and started catching very small roach on pinkie close to the bank, eventually going across where he had been feeding another swim to catch a 10oz roach on his first cast but then nothing. He ended up with 2.5lbs of very tiny roach plus the one better stamp fish, but he was out enjoying his sport made more pleasurable watching kingfishers trying their luck.

The Mersey Match on Sunday was understandably a grim affair with the river levels very high and trees floating past anglers as they fished. Roy Everson was the winner with sixteen small roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 1-7-0. Paul Field retained his claim on the runner-up spot from last week's match with 1-3-0 taken using the same method. Despite the conditions seventeen anglers fished including one newcomer who forgot his wellies, a mistake he will not repeat as the river came over a number of pegs his included.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's Christmas Prize match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge. The canal was highly coloured again but there were a few more bites to be had and everyone caught. Winner Ron Durr fished the pole alternating between bread punch and pinkie to end up with mainly roach plus a couple of perch for 2-12-0. Neil (The Engine) Buist took second place with 2-11-0. The seventeen anglers who fished all received prizes.

Ian Brody has organised a working Party at Rixton Claypits on Sunday starting a 9am but it won't be an all-day affair. Ian asks if you have any tools bring them along. All welcome.

7th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

7th December 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Not many anglers are out on the banksides this week but our bailiffs are still making regular visits looking after members interests. On Monday a lone member checked at Worthington Reservoir was catching roach, no method given but I would bet on small feeder and maggot.

Ian Higgins ignored the weather on Monday and was rewarded with four pike which he caught spinning on the Bridgewater Canal between Statham and Lymm. Nothing massive, best around 10lbs but very happy to catch anything. I checked a non-member who had recently moved to the area fishing at Preston Brook last week. He reported losing a pike but landed a specimen perch on a lure which he weighed at 3-5-0. Needless to say, he is now going to join!

Our anonymous peg builder sporting some impressive 'shades' was at it again on the Weaver Navigation on Thursday where his much-appreciated efforts have added another double peg which when the weather improves just needs 'stoning'. He reported an angler getting a fish a chuck, sadly they were minnows, at least he didn't dry net😊

Jimmy Byrne was the winner of last week's Mersey Match by a mile with an impressive weight in very poor conditions but this week they were even worse and he did not have any sign of a bite. Nick Burrows needed only fifteen tiny roach caught on feeder tactics and single maggot from peg 26 to notch up his second Mersey win of the year with a weight of 1-15-0. Paul Field took second place with the same method with 1-12-0. Thirteen anglers fished.

Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match took place this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton but the canal was highly coloured and bites were few and far between. Winner Roy Rogers fished the pole and maggot down the side to catch six tiny roach to which he added a bonus perch of 1lb for 1-4-7. George Hollis was the runner-up with 0-9-12. Thirteen anglers fished.
