23rd November 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Ray Ellis tried his hand at predator fishing for the first time on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Whatcroft this past weekend where Sunday saw him testing out his new rod. Using a small Fox ready rig with what Ray described as a green rubber fish he started fishing and would have been happy to catch anything. Well, he ended his afternoon very pleased with his catch of three perch, best he estimated at over a pound, plus a feisty pike of around 5lbs.
Alan Faulkner was the winner of this week's Mersey Match fished on the Victoria Park stretch of the river. He drew peg 21 and started his session on a groundbait feeder but a change to pole and maggot saw him have a good run of roach and perch in the last two hours for a total weight of 8-7-0. Ray Boden was in second place, again starting on the feeder but later changing over to pole tactics for 5-3-0 of roach and perch. Nineteen anglers fished.
Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match this week was on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge where match organiser and winner Jimmy Byrne drew next to the bridge. Fishing the pole and using both bread punch and pieces of worm he caught forty small roach and perch for 2-6-0. George 'Breadman' Barber used his skill with the 'white stuff' in what was another low weight match and a gin clear canal to take the runner-up spot with a weight of 1-13-0 of small roach. Evidently a boat came chugging through just before the off but as the stirred-up silt slowly fined down so the fish did a vanishing trick. Fourteen anglers fished.
There was a good turnout last week at Cicily Mill Pool where our volunteers are making a major difference with weed removal, pruning around pegs, strimming paths, and general improvements. Thanks everyone.
