19th October 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Phil Brown fished Appleton Reservoir on Friday morning float fishing for roach. It was a very slow start and he moved swims before finally after two hours he got the fish feeding. He had a shed-full in the end, mostly on corn, and a few prawns and bread. Thankfully he kept dry on this occasion as two days previous on the same fishery he crouched down forgetting he wasn't wearing his usual chest waders and with thigh waders the result was a damp feeling and a wet bum!
Andy Humphreys enjoyed a nice couple of hours on the river Alyn on Saturday morning ending up with eleven grayling to 1-8-0, one trout, and the inevitable couple of minnows. The surroundings were great enhanced by the presence of kingfishers, dippers, and grey wagtails.
Andy Corr was on the Bridgewater Canal on Sunday at Grappenhall he fished bread punch and ended up with 6lbs of roach. To see what worked the best his mate Andy fished pinkie over groundbait for 3-8-0. A short eighty-minute session there the previous day saw Rich Robinson fishing a 3metre whip to hand catching mainly pinkie and a few on white maggot. Short but sweet with eight roach and a few perch and great to be on the canal.
James Clayton tried the Weaver Navigation on Wednesday and was plagued by motherless minnows which hopefully will mean some quality perch and chub in the future. His fortunes did however turn later and he ended his day with a mixed bag of roach, perch, and a few skimmers and dace caught on red maggot using a stick-float about 5metres out. Sadly, his father couldn't get past the pesky minnows! How things can change, Malcolm Turner fished there of Friday and had the place to himself, ending up with a net of roach, perch, and a few skimmers.
Jonathan Green was the easy winner of this week's Sunday Mersey Match Series was fished at Mersey Walk with a weight of 14-2-0. He started off on a long whip using groundbait and maggot and as he said, they just kept coming. A later change to bolo was also productive with the same bait, maggot. His winning net was made up of roach with and perch. Match organiser Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 11-1-0 which included a number of roach approaching the 1lb mark. He fished the pole at 11metres throughout catching with red maggot. Quite a few of the seventeen anglers who fished had weights of 6 and 7lbs.
Our Disabled & Over 60's Monday match this week was on the Bridgewater Canal at Houghs Bridge and saw the Jeff Stoll the winner with a weight of 5-5-0. He fished the pole alternating between maggot and pinkie for a net of roach and perch. Alan Brown was the runner-up with the same mix of roach and perch for 4-4-0 but some anglers struggled for bites on pegs which normally produce. Fourteen anglers fished.
