4th May 2020 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

4th May 2021 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tony Siddall ignored the weather forecasts on May Day Bank Holiday for an unexpected enjoyable three hours fishing at Phoenix Park Lake. Fishing a small groundbait feeder and single red maggot he was taken by surprise by his first fish, a tench he reckoned was around 2.5lbs. It turned out to be the only one he caught as it was followed by twenty or so roach and three perch.

Michael Lawton enjoyed a memorable day session at Rixton Claypits on Thursday when he caught his first ever tench weighing exactly 7lbs. The specimen fell to feeder fished single corn.

On Sunday morning Bob Trueman fished the small River Banwy at Cyfronydd and reports catching three grayling around 10inches plus a 12 inch brown trout. Now discovered I am sure that he will soon be back for further sessions on this Association owned 600yds of double bank fishing upstream of the A458 bridge which I would think rarely sees an angler. Fill your boots Bob.

Thanks to a member ringing me promptly on Sunday morning reporting a torrent of water flooding from the fields into the Bridgewater Canal just up from the Tramps Grave towards Moorefields Bridge. It turned out to be a burst water main on the A56 making the canal chocolate coloured as it washed soil and hopefully no contaminants from the fields.

This week our Disabled & Over 60's event was held on our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery at Wigan in unseasonal cold and windy conditions, so windy in fact that loose-feeding was not an option. Ron Durr although the last to arrive for the draw pulled out peg 2 and made it pay with a winning net made up of a crucian, skimmers, roach, and perch for a weight of 5-9-0 caught using pole and red maggot. Only ounces separated the following weights but match organiser Jimmy Byrne 'ounced out' local rod Joe Garry to take second place with an all skimmer catch for 3-15-0. Unusually only three crucians were caught throughout the match where fifteen anglers turned out with some obviously put-off by the weather.
