29th October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

29th October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Tim Poulter enjoyed his first pike outing of the season on Friday morning at Rixton Claypits when within five minutes of his bait hitting the water, he was landing his first fish. This was followed by several others all caught on float-fished smelt. To quote him, "Nothing really big a great morning out."
Still on the predator trail but this time a day later on the Bridgewater Canal at Dunham where Ian Graham was drop-shotting for perch in the afternoon and was unprepared for a sudden vicious take, obviously not a perch. After a hectic battle a fighting fit pike lay in his landing net, unfortunately he had left his scales in his car boot but Ian reckoned it was well over 10lbs. He ended his session with two small perch caught on the same lure.

Our Sunday Mersey match series held this week at Mersey Walk was won by no other that Ant Higham aka 'The king of the River' on a very out of sorts flooded river when bites were very much a rarity. Ant fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to catch three bootlace eels, a skimmer, and a roach for 1-0-0. Second placed angler and Mersey regular Norman Gannon always comes good when the going gets hard and fished the same method for a skimmer and a roach for 0-11-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook on Monday and surprisingly the results were very much in line with the previous days Mersey match. The canal was chocolate coloured and it was a miracle that fish even found anglers bait, one good thing though was that the marauding cormorants couldn't find the fish! Ray Boden fished pole and pinkie from an end peg for two chunky roach which sent the scale round to exactly a pound. Bas Chambers took second place with 0-10-0.

Just an update on the boat vandalism I reported in last week's column that occurred on Friday 11th October at Hough's Bridge. The angler concerned rang me and it certainly wasn't him who was responsible as he left shortly after the arrival of the boats confirmed by another angler.

22nd October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

It is getting to that time of the year again on our canal fisheries as temperatures fall and inevitably with less boat traffic the clarity of the water improves, yes, its predator time again. Paul Knowles baited with sardine on Tuesday to land a new PB of 13-7-0 from the Bridgewater and Jess Steele also caught a double on the same day.

Grey Mist is still producing a few carp, on Friday Trevor Royle landed an eighteen pounder and on Tuesday of this week Phil Brown caught a 22-2-0 mirror. Both were daytime catches. Definitely worth a visit.

Alistair Hemphill a Countryside Ranger with Flintshire Council is trying to organise some angling teach-ins on one of their pools near to The Mount on the 26th July and 6th September with two 15peg sessions each day, 1100-1300 and 1300-1500. He is looking for angler volunteers to provide guidance. Anyone interest please drop me an email.

This isn't a fishery report as such but it has the potential to be harmful and cast a shadow on our sport. On Friday evening October 11th October seven boats from a cruising club moored up at Houghs Bridge, Walton, to attend a 40 years inaugural celebration at Warrington Sports Club. At the outset a fisherman on the canal bank grumbled about being disturbed by boats arriving. The next morning the first boat that had moored discovered that his cover had been slashed several times and most panels on the towpath side had been scored such that the panels will need re-painting. No other boats were touched. It is imperative for all concerned that the person responsible is caught. Any information to me in confidence please.

Our Sunday Mersey match series held this week at Victoria Park was won by Jimmy Gannon who as many will know does a lot to ensure pegs are up to standard and tidy on the water. He fished a ground bait feeder and maggot to catch of skimmers and roach for a weight of 6-7-0 just beating Mike Dench into second place by a couple of ounces. Mike caught skimmers on the feeder but changed to bolognaise and loose-fed maggot to add a few roach for a total of 6-5-0. It was nice to see 'The king of the River' making an appearance.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge and saw Derek Bibby take the winners envelope. Derek fished the pole on maggot and caster for 6-2-2 of roach and perch. George Hollis was the runner-up with 4-4-0.

Regarding the 'no legering rule' on Ackers Pit for clarity this does include the use of leads such as olivettes, and any type of bulk lead fixed or otherwise used for legering.

ken Hewitt and Dave Gardner fished a session on Monday on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Anderton Marina. Ken set up a waggler and loose-fed maggot ending up with eighteen fish which included three large gudgeon and the remainder roach and perch. Dave fished pole and maggot and caught twenty roach and single perch. on a pole.

Mike Pritchard decided on a change from his Saturday trip to the River Mersey and this week his second fishery of choice was Ackers Pit. He fished waggler using maggot and pinkie on the hook but after a blank first hour followed by a couple of small roach he changed to caster. The result was what he described as a golden last hour catching forty roach to 8oz plus a skimmer. As a point of interest bream were not stocked following the Pit being de-watered but will have come in as fry via the Bridgewater Canal feeder pipe.

A few carp coming out of an unsurprisingly very muddy Appleton Reservoir and our bailiff reports one member on Small Sandiway had seven runs which resulted in five carp landed, the best at 24lbs. Andy Clark and his son managed four carp all low doubles from the Mount on a Friday overnight session when they had the place to themselves.

Our Sunday Mersey match series this week at Mersey Walk saw Jimmy Byrne take another win with a weight of 14-4-0 made up of a 3lb bream, two five pounders, and a brace of small roach. He fished an 80gm groundbait feeder with double red maggot out of the main flow on what was an out of sorts river carrying a fair amount of extra water. His rig was regularly dragged down the swim by the strong current and floating debris. Pete Howard took second place again this week using the same method to catch a bonus bream of 5lbs to which he added skimmers for 7-15-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Hough's Bridge and saw match organiser Jimmy Byrne clock up yet another win. He was pegged in 'The Dead Length' where there was shoals of small roach with members catching up to 100 fish. Jimmy started off catching them on red maggot but soon changed and targeted the larger perch by swapping to pieces of worm on the hook to end up with 3-11-12. Barry Chambers was second with 3-8-6.

8th October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

8th October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Finally, I managed to fit in a few hours fishing on Saturday and as time was short and the Weaver Navigation virtually on my doorstep it was the obvious choice. On my arrival two other members were well into their sessions and both catching well, one mainly bream and skimmers and the other roach, the odd skimmer, several bream, and his first rudd from the venue.  I decided because it was the nearest to my car to set up on the adjacent peg kicking off with three Jaffa's of groundbait mixed with a sprinkling of micro-pellet, and maggot whilst I set up my gear. First put in a bream 1.5lbs then nothing for what seemed an age; but I need not have feared as roach, small skimmers, and gudgeon eventually homed in on my double red maggot. A good result and a happy trio.

How this guy gets away with it I just do not know but Neil Plunkett was out again on Wednesday to have another try at Appleton Reservoir. The water is very coloured with run off from the fields and feeder stream coupled with a north wind which was definitely not balmy. Bites were much more delecate and less frequent but he still managed twenty nice roach up to 1lb. Neil was out again on Friday and went to Rixton for the first time in months. Setting up on the the opposite side to the car park he used a feeder for a couple of hours to prime a likely looking spot. Just as he was starting to doubt his tactics the tip went around and the first of 13 eventual 3 to 4 lb bream was in his landing net so ending his week with around 40lbs of bream.

Adam Kelly had a productive Saturday overnight session at Appleton Reservoir with seven runs and six carp in the landing net which included a new PB mirror. I was a case of right place right time as others didn't have a single bleep, but that's fishing. Craig Woolvine landed a cracking looking common from Grey Mist on Saturday afternoon.  Ian James enjoyed his outing at The Mount when fishing his home-made boilies, he caught eight carp, best 16-12-0.

Our Sunday Mersey match series this week at Victoria Park saw Jim Gannon the winner with a weight of 7-4-0 made up of a bonus hybrid of 1.5lbs plus roach to 10ozs taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Pete Howard took second place with 6-10-0 of skimmers and roach on the same method. Certainly, better than the previous week when in flood conditions only three anglers put fish on the scales, but there were belated claims that organiser Ray Bowden's 1oz third place weight could have been beaten a number of times. The moral of the story, weigh-in every time.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on our Woodshaw Reservoir was won by match organiser Jimmy Byrne with a bonus crucian and twenty skimmers for a weight of 10-11-0 taken on the pole at 8metres alternating between maggot and caster.  George Hollis took second place with 10-1-8 of crucians and roach.

A member who was caught in possession of 'weed' on one of our fisheries had a ban imposed at our Monday committee meeting. The rules clearly state no alcohol, drugs, solvents, or other like substances are allowed on our waters.

1st October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

1st October 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

On Tuesday Neil Plunkett thought he would see if his previous successful trip to the Mount was just a flash in the pan and eight carp later, he had his answer despite the weather being a right mix with low temperatures, fog, high wind, followed by blue skies. Four seasons in one day, but Neil was more than happy with his catch which included some doubles and a cracking bonus roach not far off the magical 2lbs mark that took a liking to his luncheon meat offering.

Jamie Rogerson visited the Weaver Navigation for the first time on Monday having to put up with torrential rain and muddy pegs and definitely not expecting much action. But after a blank first hour on the pole he had his first roach which took double red maggot fished over a bed of groundbait, maggot, and hemp mix. This was followed by about thirty roach and perch and plans for a return visit.

Karl Kenny had a productive overnight session at Appleton Reservoir on Friday with three carp weighing in at 17lbs, 18lbs, and a new PB of 24-7-0. Lee Sherratt was also very happy with his three carp catch from the same fishery.

Our Sunday Mersey match series this week at Mersey Walk was to put it mildly hard in the flood conditions compounded by a high tide. Veteran angler Jimmy Byrne fished close in on a groundbait feeder with a few maggots and chopped worm in the mix to take another win with ten small eels for a weight of 2-13-0. Chris Wray also fished a groundbait feeder and maggot to catch a brace of skimmers for 1-10-0. Only three anglers caught!

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge was won by our Vice President Geoff Brooks with 5-9-0 made up of skimmers, roach, perch, and gudgeon. He fished pole and maggot, but nothing you can buy from a tackle shop, these were no less than Geoff's home-bred gozzers. What he used to breed the plump white beauties is still top secret. Jimmy Byrne who drew at the opposite end of the match took second place with 5-5-10 of mainly skimmers caught alternating between maggot and caster.
