27th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column Notes

27th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Two thirteen-year-old junior members, Jacob Lewis-Dalton and Sam Roberts fished at Appleton Reservoir on Thursday. After a slow start on boilies they both changed bait to double maize on the hook and things immediately started to improve. By the end of their session they had netted nine carp with Jacob dominating the early action ending up with a personal tally of six fish, including one of 18lbs, and the biggest at 21lbs. Not to be out done, after landing a rather sorry-looking eight-pounder Sam landed carp of 24lb and 21lb in consecutive casts, the latter tangling with Jacob as he fought to land his final fish of 14lb. Both boys reported that the fish were taking ferociously with rods virtually bouncing off the rests. A rather envious nearby adult angler kindly took a photo of Sam's 24lb fish.

Philip Brown landed four carp from the Mount on Tuesday and lost two, one he hooked was a mid-double common which ran him all over the place. Phil reckons that he had never had a carp fight so hard and played it for around six minutes during which time it ran him in the trees down the margin then went right out to the middle of the lake. Just when Phil thought the fight was over and slipped his landing net under the fish it had other ideas and in a last-ditch effort jumped out of the net and slipped the hook.

Mike Pritchard enjoyed a busy session on the River Mersey on Saturday that started when after introducing some maggots and groundbait feed he cast over it with a straight lead set-up whilst setting up his waggler rod. It took him some time to get his rod rigged as the tip just kept going round with bites from hungry roach, skimmers, and a couple of small chub. Finally, with waggler rod in hand and leger rod on the bank he could concentrate on his favourite method. Fishing the same line, a change to caster brought a better stamp of fish ending his session with a mixed net of fifty-plus.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished again at Kingsway Allotments saw Ray Boden back in first place as he fished his favourite pole and maggot method for a catch of roach and perch for a weight of 10-10-0. With not a bream in site Jimmy Byrne who was fishing a groundbait feeder and maggot ended up in second place with 6-9-0 of small skimmers and roach.

In form Ray Boden also won our Sunday Mersey match series which was fished at Mersey Walk. Ray fished pole and maggot for a weight of 17-14-0 made up of four silver bream, eight perch, and the remainder small roach.  Again, in second place Jimmy Byrne stuck to his groundbait feeder and maggot method but again the large bream failed to show and he ended up catching skimmers and roach for 10-12-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday saw a change of venue to our popular Woodshaw Reservoir where our local bailiff and fishery management team greeted them before the draw with tea, coffee, and biscuits. It was won by Jimmy Byrne with eight crucians, skimmers, and roach caught using pellet and caster. 'Breadman' George Barber took second place fishing the pole for a net of crucians and roach alternating between bread and pellet for 10-14-0.

20th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

20th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Neil Plunkett was given a pass on Friday and opted for Grey Mist to target silvers as he had read reports on Facebook saying there were none due to predation.  It was bucketing down with rain from the off and there were just two other zipped up bivvies on the venue.  He finished with a mixed bag of 30 roach and perch, 5 roach and 1 perch around the pound mark and another half dozen up to 12 oz.  Ground bait feeder and maggot on a paternoster rig and also a small bomb and worm accounted for some of the bigger fish.  No more than 25 yards out in a clear patch.  Also, a cheeky pike struck three times hanging on to its prey but releasing just out of netting reach right up to the last fish!

As there were still some maggots left in the bait fridge it seemed a shame to waste them, so Neil was out again on Monday returning to Grey Mist to see if the silvers would play again. The result was couple of dozen roach again, not so large but he had no worms this time.  A few of the roach were caught on the waggler 10 yards out, rest on groundbait feeder and double maggot on a size sixteen hook. He did this time however take his pike rod with a single circle hook rig to try out. Neil caught three pike, best a double, all stunning colours and condition.

His conclusion, a great fishery and there is always something to catch if the tench and carp don't want to play! Also, the rumours of lack of silvers is incorrect as there were plenty of a good stamp and in excellent condition.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished again at Kingsway Allotments saw Ray Boden relegated to second place as in form Jimmy Byrne was the easy winner with over 14lb to spare. He caught six bream to 4lb plus skimmers and silver bream using groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 18-10-0. Ray fished the same method catching a couple of small bream plus roach for 4-4-0.

Our Sunday Mersey match series was fished at Victoria Park and was won again by none other than Jimmy Byrne with 15-8-0 made up of four bream to 4lbs and the rest skimmers. Jimmy fished kept to his successful method of groundbait feeder and maggot.  Chris Wray was on the same method and took second place with a stunning bonus 8lbs bream plus skimmers with 13-12-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Farm Road was won by Jimmy Byrne with a roach, and perch catch caught using pole and alternating between maggot and caster for a weight of 3-14-8. As he had already won both the weekends Mersey matches this clocked up the treble, no mean feat on a well below par canal. Rod Frazer was in second place with a net of roach and gudgeon for 3-0-10.

13th September 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

John Nicholls was pleased to report 'that the big grassie is still with us' as he caught the fish at 29lb on his Saturday overnight session at Moore Quarry. Apart from treating a small scab and hook hold the fish went back full of beans and looked awesome.

Head bailiff James Makin enjoyed a peaceful session at Grey Mist on his Saturday night session when he kicked off with a 17.5lb linear from the Boathouse Swim shortly after setting up.  It was a long wait until his next run at 5-45am which resulted in a 21lb 3oz specimen. Both fish were caught using a Ronnie Rig using Sticky Baits pineapple pop-ups.

Apart from some decent tench catches reported weeks ago on Phoenix park Lake it was a pleasant change to learn that Ste Worrall reports landing a 16lbs carp last week. It is some years now since we last stocked carp in this fishery and to cap it all a couple of years ago a consignment was almost there when we found the lock had been either tampered with or changed and all but for a container of fish that volunteers carried from the gate the rest were diverted to Rixton Claypits.

Keith Starkey set his stall out for tench at Grey Mist on Tuesday morning and started off with 5-8-0 beauty but a change from big maggot feeder to a hybrid feeder and pellets really kickstarted the action when a further seven fish followed, the smallest at 4-8-0 and the biggest came last at 7-8-0.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished again at Kingsway Allotments was again won this week by match organiser Ray Boden with exactly the same weight of 5-4-0 made up of a skimmer around the pound mark with the rest made up of roach and perch, all taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Jim Gannon was second with 4-10-0 off silver bream and roach on the same method.

The 2nd Association Rod Only match was fished on Sunday ay Mersey Walk was won by Jimmy Byrne with 16-15-0 made up of three bream to 4lbs and the rest skimmers. Jimmy fished a groundbait feeder and maggot as did second placed Alan Morris with a catch bream and skimmers for a weight of 11-12-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on the Bridgewater Canal at Delph Lane, Keckwick was won by Derek Bibby with a catch of eighty roach, perch, and gudgeon for 4-6-10 taken on the pole using bread and pinkie. Jimmy Byrne took second place with 3-11-8.

6th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

6th August 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

One of our members rang me on Tuesday morning to say that fish were in distress at Statham Pool and that he had reported it to the Environment Agency. It wasn't too long before the E A Fisheries Team were on site where the dissolved oxygen level was found to be down to only 5%. A short time later aeration equipment was putting lifesaving oxygen back into the water giving hope that a massive fish kill could be averted. At the present time it seems to have hit bream and a few carp plus a single pike which is unusual as they are usually one of the first species to succumb to low oxygen levels. Many thanks to those members who turned up to help save the fishery, although more help may be needed.

There are some good catches of carp being reported from Appleton Reservoir with James Bradshaw enjoying his Saturday overnight session with nine fish, but not one was caught during the night. Although he was disappointed that he didn't manage to make it into double figures all the carp were well over that with the biggest at 24lbs. Joe Bright landed a mirror which weighed in at 23-8-0. Ian Sewell had a productive session with some clonking roach using a small feeder and maggot.

Paul Knowles fished the Mount at Buckley on Sunday and snapped his quiver tip but the consolation was in the catch of a carp of over 8lbs and a bream, backed up by some specimen roach which took a liking to everything from mini boilies, 10mm wafters, and corn. This is a great all-round fishery and well worth a visit.

Craig Stubbs and his mate Dave had another great day on Arley Reservoir on Sunday catching over eighty pounds of fish between them.  Their catches were made up of bream, hybrids, roach, skimmers and perch.

The Saturday Mersey match series fished at Kingsway Allotments was won this week by match organiser Ray Boden with a weight of 5-4-0 made up of a 3lbs bream and skimmers all taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Mike Worley took second place, again on the feeder and included a 2lbs chub plus skimmers for a weight of 4-7-0.

The Challenge Shield match also fished at Victoria Park was won by Pete Howard with 15-11-0 made up of a bonus 3lbs bream with the rest skimmers to a pound taken on a groundbait feeder and maggot. Danny Sixsmith took the runner-up spot with an all roach catch taken on pole and maggot for a weight of 11-15-0.

Our Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday held on the Bridgewater Canal at Pickerings Bridge was won by Lenny (End Peg) Dutton who drew true to form. He had an all roach catch taken on the pole using bread and pinkie. The runner up spot was taken by octogenarian Stan Charnock who fished a small groundbait feeder and triple pinkie to snare a 3lbs bream plus a perch for 3-2-0.
