21st May 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

21st May 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The funeral of longstanding member Ernie Hutchinson took place on Tuesday, 21st May 2019. Ernie in the past had taken on all sorts of volunteer jobs for Warrington Anglers Association including a bailiff role. He was a keen match angler and represented WAA on our National Squad all over the country. He used to give me regular catch reports from around our waters usually accompanied by his fishing mate Dickie Wernham, I christened the pair 'The Dynamic Duo.' Ernie was also the first angler to catch on Sandiway large lake when after six years continuous stocking as the club had ideas of it being a match water, he changed everything on the opening day with a catch of big bream taken on slider tactics. It sealed its fate as a specimen fishery. Condolences to his family.

Graham Tuck and Mick Kenyon decided on a trip to Worthington Reservoirs this week and set up their tackle on Worthington (No. 1) but from 7-30am to 12 noon with nothing but a single perch it didn't take much discussion to make the move to the adjacent Arley Reservoir. It turned out to be the right decision as by the time to leave at 4-30pm they had both had a cracking days fishing with about 20lbs or so of fish each. Graham fished a whip and maggot for a mix of roach and perch to 8oz whilst Mick was on a waggler for a similar mix including a few chunky specimens.

On Saturday Martin James took his daughter Amber aged four years on her first ever fishing trip at her own request. The chosen venue was Ackers Pit where they had the place to themselves having a really pleasant few hours. Martin set up his pole top kit for Amber where she caught a small roach on her first cast and it was all smiles from thereon. The youngster ended up catching eight roach to 14oz plus a couple of rudd. Her dad even managed to fit in a few casts for himself with sweetcorn at about 5metres over a handful of micro-pellets and snared a bream 3-4lbs plus a hybridised crucian. Congratulations Amber, I'm certain that you will never forget this your first outing 😊

For member Kevin Bell it was a 2.5hour trip to our Offa's Dyke fisheries where he set up his tackle on the middle pool and fished a waggler with bread flake on the hook over a bed of groundbait. He was hoping for a tench but was pleasantly surprised with five decent sized chub, the best 4-6-0 plus a small carp. Kevin reckons that it was worth the long drive for lovely simple fishing for hard fighting fish in beautiful surroundings. He hasn't given up on the tench and I can confirm that we stocked them along with carp and thousands of roach, rudd, and hybrids.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge on Monday and saw local rod veteran Rod Fraser the winner with a net of pole caught small roach for a weight of 4-14-0. The runner-up spot was taken by Phil Andrews with 4-9-0.

Members who take the trouble to send in catch reports earn the appreciation of fellow members as it helps them to know how waters are fishing and plan their outings. Equally important, they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. New members are welcome to call in and join, current ones can renew their subscription, or night permit.
