22nd January 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

22nd January 2019 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Despite catches on the Mersey being understandably down from months ago when conditions were somewhat warmer it didn't deter John Redmond who fished the river for the first time on our stretch behind the waste site at Woolston. He set up a small groundbait feeder introducing a few maggots with single maggot on the hook and was soon catching small roach, nothing massive but a few were in the 8oz bracket. John ended his three-hour session with thirty plus fish.

Thanks to the gentleman who rang me to report anglers fishing on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook on Saturday afternoon who he reckoned were non-members. His intuition was right, there were two anglers piking who both knew the score. The cheek of it was that as I was checking them one had a pike about 11lbs and told me he had already caught four others! Needless to say, they didn't argue and packed up and left with a suitable warning. As a matter of interest 'theft of fishing rights' which is fishing without permission or unlicensed is a reportable police matter and recordable offence.

Our Sunday Mersey Series was held again at Mersey Walk this week and saw Derek Bibby fishing with pole and maggot take the win with two perch, the rest roach for a weight of 6-15-0. Fishing the same method Ed Frangleton and Bas Chambers took joint second place with 4-2-0 nets of roach.

Monday's Disabled & Over 60's Match fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Walton saw Jimmy Byrne take the honours for the second week in succession with 9-8-9 of roach and perch taken on the pole alternating between pinky and punched bread.  George Hollis took second place using the same method with a weight of 5-12-7.

Keep those catch reports coming, good, bad, or indifferent as they help follow members to gauge how waters are fishing and to plan their outings. And equally important they give me something to write about! Email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or give me a ring on 01928 716238.

WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 9pm. 2019-night permits are now available from HQ. You can no longer book on with last year's numbers. All being well the 2019 membership books should be posted out to members at the end of next week. On receipt the 2018 one is invalid and the new one must be paid before fishing any of our waters.
