21st August 2018 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Member and self-admitted amateur stick-float angler Steve Cartledge had a two-hour session on the River Mersey on Wednesday evening and chose a peg near Victoria park. The result was a bite every run through the swim with rudd, roach to 6oz, perch, dace, and skimmers. He commented, "Great Sport. An expert would empty the place." Irrespective of that comment it is what the individual angler enjoys from his sport and I know Steve was more than happy with his short but productive session. For the record some 'experts' can certainly talk the talk but that's as far as it goes.
Sunday morning saw Anthony Rough fishing his favourite stretch of the River Dee at Worthenbury for the first time this season. The water level wasn't too bad considering the long spell of dry weather and fishing maggots trotting a small Avon float the fishing was superb from the off. Anthony caught forty plus dace, seven brown trout, four grayling, a small chub, and his first ever perch from the stretch which was just over a pound. He reckons it is well worth a visit despite the rough track which he negotiates at no more than walking pace.
Dave Gardner tried his luck at Ackers Pit this past week where at last following the long dry spell the fresh water feed from the Bridgewater Canal is again flowing through and over the outflow. He had two mirror carp of 5.5 and 6.5lbs and half a dozen roach 6-8oz. He fished a waggler catching on maggot, sweetcorn, and with his penchant for unusual baits rowan berries.
Kingsway Allotments is really providing consistently good sport for our Mersey Match Series devotees where this week Rod Frazer fishing pole and maggot put a mixed net of roach and perch on the scales for a winning weight of 10-3-0. After a week out of the frame match organiser Ray Boden was back taking second place with 9-3-0 on the same method. No bonus bream showed up in this week's event.
As per the previous week eights got even better the following day on Sundays Mersey Series event at Victoria Park. Ant Higham A.K.A 'The King of the River' stamped his authority with a cracking winning weight of 20-2-0 made up of bream and skimmers taken on ground bait feeder and caster. There was a tie for second place when Neil Davies and Mike Dench both weighed in 13-7-0. The both used different methods, Neil pole and caster and Mike an 8metre whip with hemp and caster. You can frame with almost any method which makes the river a fair venue.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match which this week was fished on the Trent & Mersey Canal at School Road. Billy Bull put together a net of roach and a bonus tench of 2lbs for a winning weight of 8-0-12. He fished the pole and caster at 12metres. George (the breadman) Barber was the runner-up with 6-4-0 of roach. I don't usually mention third place but Warrington Anglers Vice President drew his third end peg in as many weeks which he made pay with 5-14-0.
Cicely Millis still shut although some idiot has been removing the closuresigns.
