Des Boyd took some time off from his WAA bailiffs duties to fit in a short session on Rixton Claypits last week. Now Des is 'old school' as he was fishing one of my favourite methods, a groundbait feeder and maggot, but not using the now conventional quiver tip. He opted for an even more delicate bite indication that most of you if you even have one may need to rummage through your older items of tackle to find it! Yes, the item was a swing tip which offers very little resistance to a biting fish. The result was half a dozen bream all around 3.5 to 4lbs and he lost a few off the hook.
Alan Biesty and his friends had a tough day at Grey Mist Mere last weekend that started at 7am in heavy rain. Despite trying every trick in the book and a variety of baits to tempt a tench, there was nothing doing. In a last-ditch effort Alan dropped his red maggot offering with one silicone red maggot over the eye of the hook as an aligner close in under tree branches and immediately hooked into a carp and despite playing it for some time it slipped the hook. It was 5pm and getting towards the last chance saloon time so he cast out to an earlier swim where he had been feeding and stitched a ring of maggots into a ring mixed with 3 silicone floaters. Result a cracking 6lbs tench. Alan summed up the day, and I quote, "We all had a nice day together on the Mist, and it doesn't really matter if you don't catch as long as you enjoy your time together with good friends." For the record a few more tench have been showing these past few days, possibly with the better weather.
Generally, around our waters if you want some roach action it is Appleton Reservoir; smaller silvers, crucians, and small carp try Woodshaw Reservoir; and for a real variety it has got to be Statham Pool, although it is a bit muddy at present. I believe a few quality carp have been coming out of Sandiway Lakes, but getting further info is like platting fog..
This week our Monday at our Disabled & Over 60's match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Daresbury Labs. WAA Vice President Geoff Brooks clocked up his first win of the year with a weight of 3-10-6 taken on the pole at 11metres. His net of small roach and skimmers. Second placed angler Jimmy Byrne weighed in 3-3-6 from the peg next door.
