19th September, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
The water levels are down on Worthington Lakes but that did not affect sport for Ian James whilst fishing Arley Reservoir (the middle fishery) on Monday. He used a groundbait feeder and double maggot to target the lakes bream but all he could catch for the first two hours were roach up to a pound. Eventually his tip shot round and Ian struck into a better fish and a bronze beauty of around 3lbs soon lay in the landing net. This was followed by eight more fish around the same stamp, all in all an enjoyable days fishing.
It is more years than I care to remember when we stocked tench into the Bridgewater Canal from the old Neptune Club car park at Preston Brook. Well this week my neighbour showed me a photograph of a cracking olive coloured beauty around 3.5 to 4lbs he had caught the day before from the very spot. He has also been catching quality roach and bream from the same area. His tip, early morning or evening when there is less chance of boat traffic.
There are several working parties on our waters this weekend, the first on the large lake at Sandiway, some areas where the work is being carried out will be closed during Saturday and also members on the small lake may have some slight disturbance whilst volunteers remove line.
The Mount fishery will be closed for dangerous tree removal works from Friday evening over the weekend until late on the Sunday 24th September (depending on when the job is completed).
We have had a few grumbles regarding the lilies at Grey Mist, well, they are being treated in the next week or so, but it will be an ongoing job as we are restricted to the chemicals that we can effectively use thanks to an EU dictate. Many thanks to the Council who will be treating the Japanese knotweed that has spread over from their refuse site.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Bridgewater Canal at Acton Grange Bridge where a good number of years past if you drew on the Moore side you were in with a chance of a win. That's not the situation nowadays as the top four weights came from the opposite side and Vice President Geoff Brooks was the top weight in a hard match with 3-7-12 of pole caught roach and gudgeon taken on pinkie and caster in the last hour. Graham Belton was the runner-up with 2-12-0.
Derek Bibby won our Saturday Mersey Series match using feeder tactics and maggot for a weight of 6-2-0 made up of three skimmers, roach, and perch. In form Jim Gannon was in the money again taking second place with 4-8-0 on the same method.
Derek Bibby followed his previous days success by also winning our Sunday Mersey match with 6-4-0 taken on the pole and groundbait feeder. Jimmy Byrnes was second with 5-11-0. Don't forget it is the Mersey Championship on Sunday.
