26th September, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Alan Coles reports visiting our stretch of the Dee at Shocklach last week and because the river was carrying extra water decided on a heavy maggot feeder approach. Casting only a couple of rod-lengths out Alan caught nine chub, not big fish, but was especially pleased with his five grayling which ranged from 1lb to 1.5lbs and fell to red maggot. Not too bad a session considering it was only two and a half hours.

Many thanks to those members who turned out for the working parties on our Sandiway Lakes fisheries and the Mount at Buckley this past weekend. Unfortunately, because of health and safety we had to close the latter but it was advertised on our Facebook page and my blog which is the only viable option as it would be prohibitive to inform members individually.

Last week I mentioned the lilies at Grey Mist, well, EA permission was given and they are being treated on Wednesday 27th September so there will be a boat and operatives on site and small degree of disruption whilst they spray the plants. A few quality tench around the 6lbs mark have been reportedly showing up in catches so perhaps worth a visit.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match this week was fished on the Trent & Mersey at Billinge produced some decent canal weights. It was won by Jimmy Byrne with a net of roach and perch, plus a bonus skimmer for a weight of 6-5-0. Geoff Brooks was second with 5-4-4.

Ray Boden showed his mastery of river pole fishing when this past week he won our Tuesday Series, Saturday Series, and our Sunday Mersey Championship matches for good measure. He started his treble on Tuesday, winning with a weight of 9-10-0 of roach and perch taken on maggot and almost 6lbs ahead of second placed Jim Gannon who fished a ground-bait feeder for 3-11-0.

Ray stuck to his favourite pole and maggot tactics on Saturday and his weight of 14-3-0 saw him again heading towards a 6lbs margin over second placed Alan Birchall who weighed 8-10-0 using the same method.

And Sunday saw Ray become the 2017 Mersey Champion, pole again, and a weight of 12-11-0 made up of a bonus eel and perch around the 1lb mark, plus roach and a sea-trout of 2.5lbs that stretched his pole elastic to the limit but sadly they don't count and it went back hopefully to spawn upriver. Dave Hill fished a waggler and maggot for second place with 7-9-0.

19th September 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th September, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The water levels are down on Worthington Lakes but that did not affect sport for Ian James whilst fishing Arley Reservoir (the middle fishery) on Monday. He used a groundbait feeder and double maggot to target the lakes bream but all he could catch for the first two hours were roach up to a pound. Eventually his tip shot round and Ian struck into a better fish and a bronze beauty of around 3lbs soon lay in the landing net. This was followed by eight more fish around the same stamp, all in all an enjoyable days fishing.

It is more years than I care to remember when we stocked tench into the Bridgewater Canal from the old Neptune Club car park at Preston Brook. Well this week my neighbour showed me a photograph of a cracking olive coloured beauty around 3.5 to 4lbs he had caught the day before from the very spot. He has also been catching quality roach and bream from the same area.  His tip, early morning or evening when there is less chance of boat traffic.

There are several working parties on our waters this weekend, the first on the large lake at Sandiway, some areas where the work is being carried out will be closed during Saturday and also members on the small lake may have some slight disturbance whilst volunteers remove line.

The Mount fishery will be closed for dangerous tree removal works from Friday evening over the weekend until late on the Sunday 24th September (depending on when the job is completed).

We have had a few grumbles regarding the lilies at Grey Mist, well, they are being treated in the next week or so, but it will be an ongoing job as we are restricted to the chemicals that we can effectively use thanks to an EU dictate.  Many thanks to the Council who will be treating the Japanese knotweed that has spread over from their refuse site.

Our Monday Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Bridgewater Canal at Acton Grange Bridge where a good number of years past if you drew on the Moore side you were in with a chance of a win. That's not the situation nowadays as the top four weights came from the opposite side and Vice President Geoff Brooks was the top weight in a hard match with 3-7-12 of pole caught roach and gudgeon taken on pinkie and caster in the last hour. Graham Belton was the runner-up with 2-12-0.

Derek Bibby won our Saturday Mersey Series match using feeder tactics and maggot for a weight of 6-2-0 made up of three skimmers, roach, and perch. In form Jim Gannon was in the money again taking second place with 4-8-0 on the same method.

Derek Bibby followed his previous days success by also winning our Sunday Mersey match with 6-4-0 taken on the pole and groundbait feeder. Jimmy Byrnes was second with 5-11-0. Don't forget it is the Mersey Championship on Sunday.

12th September 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

12th September, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

Congratulations to Dan Anderson who caught a cracking mirror carp last weekend from our Association owned 53acre lake at Sandiway. The stunning looking fish weighed 36lbs, but unfortunately when the report of this memorable catch was posted onto our Facebook page it brought some adverse comments from some members as to why it was made public. Well, it may come as a surprise to these people but as a club such good publicity not only encourages existing members but helps bring in new members to help pay for such fish and fund our ongoing stocking program.

Stuart Peters fished our stretch of the River Wye on Saturday and reports catching only one barbel using halibut pellet but a change to maggot and hemp in the feeder brought a bite every chuck. Loads of dace, chublets, grayling, and a handful of larger chub plus a couple more barbel for good measure. Worth the trip.

On Monday, our Disabled & Over 60's match was on the Bridgewater Canal at Preston Brook and Lenny Dutton famous for his end peg draws put his hand in the bag and drew yet another.  Lenny made it pay with a winning net of roach and skimmers for 6-15-0. Bread man, George Barber took second place using pole and punch for 5-6-6.

Our Tuesday Mersey series match this week was won by Baz Chambers with 8-5-0 on roach and perch caught fishing the pole and casters. Only an ounce behind Rod Frazer and Derek Bibby shared second place with identical weights of 8-4-0.

Jim Gannon tackled a flooded River Mersey on our Saturday Series event using his favourite groundbait feeder and maggot method to take a well-deserved win with 5-7-0. Jim who does lots of work keeping the clubs fishing pegs and undergrowth in trim included skimmers, roach, and perch in his catch and could easily have doubled his winning weight had he not lost a 6lbs bream at the net…that's fishing. Alan Morris fished the same method to take second place with 4-1-0.

Bob Clough had 5lbs to spare when he won our Sunday Mersey match with a weight of 11-6-0 that included two 3lbs bonus bream plus roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Jim Gannon was in the frame again following on from his previous days win to take the runner-up spot with 6-6-0.

For a trial period, the committee has increased the night fishing at Worthington Lakes to two consecutive nights with immediate effect to encourage more members to fish this excellent fishery.

5th September 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

5th September, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

After being confined to the house for several days due to a stomach bug Tony Rough was getting cabin fever and as all dedicated anglers know a well-known cure for this is an urgent fishing session. So, he headed to the River Dee at Worthenbury for some much-needed fresh air. Fishing an Avon float with a centrepin reel he loose fed maggots with the same on the hook.  His first grayling soon lay in his landing net followed during the session by another nineteen and one salmon parr. On this occasion dace were conspicuous by their absence but watch this space. For the game anglers, my local source reckons that there are a few fish showing.

On the carp fishing scene, there are good numbers of fish coming from Rixton Claypits, Grey Mist, and Appleton Reservoir with a good number of twenties from the latter. On the negative side is the discovery by bailiffs at Appleton of some 'death rigs' where in the event of a line break carp would be dragging leads with the inevitable result of being tethered. There is absolutely no excuse for such tackle and if caught those using it would be almost certain to lose their membership. Ignorance in this modern day and age where you can 'Google' anything is no excuse.

On Monday, our Disabled & Over 60's match was held at our Woodshaw Reservoir fishery at Aspull where Alan Birchall enjoyed a decisive win with a mixed net of roach and crucians for a weight of 16.5lbs. Second place went to Joe Garry with a similar catch for 13-10-0.  This popular pocket-sized fishery is definitely worth a visit.

Rod Frazer repeated his win of last week's Tuesday Mersey series match with half the weight but had to share it with Ray Boden as they both put 5-2-0 of roach and perch on the scales. Both caught on the usual pole and maggot. Ed Frangleton the runner-up with 3-14-0.

Ray Boden took the winners spot at our Saturday Mersey event with 8-5-0 of roach and perch using pole and maggot tactics. Chris Wray was second with 4-4-0 with the same mix of fish and method.

Our Pairs match showed the benefit of an end peg draw as the winners both seemed to have the magic touch and drew accordingly. Ray Boden and Bob Clough combined their weights of 13-5-0 and 10-2-0 totalling 23-7-0. Due to there being an odd man left at the draw it was decided to double the weight of that person which just happened to be Roy Everson who weighed 5-11-0 doubled up to 11-6-0 for second 'pair'. Catches were made up in the main with roach and perch plus a few chub.
