27th June 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Column

27th June, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

On Saturday Andy Smith in his third year as a member went to Association owned Woodshaw Reservoir for a short morning session. He caught skimmer after skimmer towards the middle of the lake but fed a handful of maggots down the margin planning to have the last hour on the pole. However, the two or three sizeable bream he saw moving in almost immediately on the bait proved too tempting and he wound in immediately. Andy quite literally dropped a piece of corn at his rod top with the result that half a dozen bream, all around 3ls came one after the other. Andy commented, "Fantastic fishing, and again need to express my admiration for the work the bailiffs do, the place was absolutely spotless."

Neil Buck reports some decent catches of chub to over 3lbs from the tiny River Wyre at Garstang. This fishery which has by and large steep banks is worth a visit where members can enjoy decent sport on either the stick-float or feeder tactics. Aside from chub the fishery holds some decent bream and perch plus the odd chance of game fish. Parking is easy.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished this week on the Mersey at Victoria Park but bites were scarce and finicky for most anglers. Match veteran Jimmy Byrne had a comfortable buffer of 2lbs over second placed Roy Rogers and weighed 5-2-0 against Roy's 3-2-0. Both angler fished the tip on maggot feeder. Pegs one to eight had the best results but the low weights didn't take the edge of the competitive spirit of this popular and friendly match series.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifMatch organiser Ray Boden was well clear of the field on our Mersey Saturday Series where he weighed in a nice net of thirty small bream, roach, perch, and chub taken on pole and maggot tactics for 10-2-0. Second placed Dave Brooks fished the same method catching roach and perch for a net of 7-13-0.

The Mersey Sunday Series was won by Jim Gannon with 7-8-0 of skimmers, roach, and perch taken on groundbait feeder bread punch, and maggot. Match organiser Ray Boden was in the runner-up spot with 5-3-0 caught on his favourite pole tactics and maggot. Nice to see committee member Ade Green in the frame.

Good news is that increasing numbers of parent members are taking advantage of the free fishing available for youngster under 12 years on the four designated fisheries. This is great for the future of our sport and from personal experience there is nothing nicer than seeing the beaming smile and excitement of the first catch.

The bad news is that between the 16th and 18th June some thieving toe-rags stole the toilet from Offa's Dyke Fishery. It will cost WAA just under £900 and if it cannot be secured in any way sadly it will not be replaced. If anyone has any ideas of these scum please get in touch and I will have a word with the 'boys in blue'.

20th June 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

20th June, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

Stuart Peters chose our stretch of the River Wye at Hay-on-Wye for his first river session with an overnighter Friday until 6-30am Saturday. It's some way to go but despite a blank period between 12mn to 3am he still managed fifteen chub ranging from 2 to 4lbs plus a barbel a just under 7lbs, losing another one in a snag. Stuart reports the lower beat is overgrown and of course we are still trying to sort out the access issues to this part. If approached please be polite.

Mike Pritchard was really looking forward to the 16th June as it was the opening of the outdated river close season for coarse fish. With only time enough available for a quick session he targeted the River Mersey at Victoria park and despite his shock horror seeing five cormorants in his peg he still managed five roach, six perch, and two small chub of around 10oz which is good news indeed as it indicates that they are breeding. Mike fished the waggler and double pinkie.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished this week at our Woodshaw Reservoir Fishery at Wigan. Jeff Garry put together a winning weight of 14-2-0 made up of crucians, bream, and roach taken on pole and pellet. Jimmy Byrne was in second place with 13-8-0. On a blistering hot day, everyone even in the low weights caught between 4 and 7lbs.

The first Association match of the season was won by Jim Gannon with 7-12-0 of skimmers to 1lb, roach, and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot. Match organiser Ray Boden was in the runner-up spot with 7-2-0 and just that crucial 1lb skimmer short of the win. Anyway, not too bad results for the first match of the season.

It always amazes me that a small minority of members just do not get it that the rules also apply to them. They are simple enough to follow and are there to protect both members and the club as well as making members fishing pleasurable. We are an easy-going club with great members so the committee will not tolerate their visits to our fisheries being spoiled by the few.

13th June 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

13th June, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

Lots of fish are showing at Woodshaw Reservoir where John Reece reports having a busy afternoon session last week. John fished pole and soft pellet to catch eighteen crucians all around the 2lbs mark plus two chub of the same stamp. Worth a visit as evidently the fish have all spawned and by all accounts they are 'on the munch'. Also in Wigan our Worthington Lakes complex sees Adlington Reservoir re-open for fishing on Friday 16th June after being closed for three months. Reports please.

Currently Ackers Pit must rate amongst one of our lesser used fisheries despite it being full of fish with easy access and parking. Our local bailiff is currently reconstructing and re-surfacing all the pegs so you can virtually fish in your slippers! Members this week were catching carp, tench, roach, and crucians, no complicated methods just back to basics waggler fishing.

At last following an imposed 90 day unnecessary coarse fish closed season on our river fisheries they are open for business again on Friday 16th June. Let us just hope that the fish are in a feeding mood for our first Mersey Association Contest on Sunday (details below) as evidently the EA Fisheries bailiffs spotted a large shoal of bream spawning in the weedy margins. Next Saturday the 24th our regular weekly match series kicks off, 9am draw Kingsway allotments.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished this week on the Bridgewater Canal at Hill Top which saw Lennie (end peg) Dutton win with a net of roach for 2-14-12. Runner-up Roy Rogers  was only two ounces behind with a weight of 2-12-12. Despite the low weights it was a fairly close match.

It is always a last resort when our committee withdraw membership but on Monday two anglers became ex-members when they showed a total disregard for our rules.

6th June 2017 Warrington Anglers association Guardian Notes

6th June, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes[f1]

Many thanks to the member who gave me the 'as its happening' information regarding five poachers fishing floating bread on Ackers Pit on Sunday. His prompt action enabled our bailiff to react within minutes. Due to the large numbers of ducks and the resident swans floating baits are banned on this fishery so imagine how it would reflect on our club if these poachers had hooked a swan or a duck. As a matter of interest, they were in such a hurry to leave that they left one of their rods behind. Perhaps the 'loser' like to contact me and following the court case for 'theft of fishing rights' you never know the magistrates may direct that it be returned to the owner!

As a matter of interest Ackers is worth a visit according to regular contributor to this column Mike Pritchard who enjoyed a session there on Saturday fishing his favourite waggler method. He fed maggot and pinkie catching roach from 3oz to 6oz every cast but a change to caster brought fish of a better stamp around 10oz plus an eel of 1.5lbs. In a couple of hours, he had around 9lbs of fish and another angler on a peg near reeds was evidently bagging up on the tench that we stocked some time ago.

Neil Plunkett went to Grey Mist last week and as the tench fishing has not been great for him this year he decided to try without maggots as he had been catching a few eels and switched to a plethora of baits pellets, corn, meat, boilies all at range and sat watching silent alarms for 7 hours! Neil returned on Monday armed with maggots and tried the feeder but again no action, so he got out the trusty waggler rod and fished close in where he had seen buzzers hatching. Net result 22 nice perch and 8 roach.  Not what he set out for but not a bad end to the day. That's fishing.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday was fished this week on the Trent & Mersey Canal at Billinge where our Vice President Geoff Brooks was the winner with 3-9-12. He fished pole at 11metres catching mainly small roach on pinkie. Committee member Graham (Magnum) Belton was the runner-up with a weight of 2-14-10.
