14th March 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

14th March, 2017 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

The tench and carp are definitely waking up on Grey Mist Mere where on Monday Norbert Molnare landed a 22lbs carp taken on Krill boilie. Eric J Smith and his grandson Callum also visited the Mist this week where they managed a tench apiece on maggot feeder. Callum, a keen photographer saw a flash of blue so camera in hand he headed towards a likely spot where he thought a kingfisher had perched. Only to return twenty minutes later having crept commando style through the undergrowth to find the targeted orange breast plumage was in fact a float hanging from a branch. Specsavers?

Mark Pryor and his mate Steve Draper enjoyed a session on the River Dane at Holmes Chapel on Saturday where after catching a brace of trout Steve moved swim to end up with nine chub. All fish fell to either meat or caster using a hemp packed feeder. Steve managed two chub but still had an enjoyable day. Unlike myself on the Dee at Worthenbury when hooking my one and only fish of the afternoon promptly lost it!

The last Sunday River Mersey match this week until the season reopens on the 16th June was another low weight affair won by Martin Lenihan with twenty small roach taken on groundbait feeder and maggot for a weight of 2-2-0. Jim Gannon took second place with 1-13-0. I bet the guys are hoping for better sport during their mid-year series.

At last, following a few section wins and a trio of placings committee member Graham Belton won our Bridgewater Canal Disabled and Over 60's match on Monday for the first time this year. Graham drew an end peg at Preston Brook and included a couple of bonus skimmer bream in his catch to weigh 2-14-8. He caught his fish on pole and bread punch tactics. Ron Durr was in second place with 1-9-10. No other angler broke a pound.

Well done and thankyou to the small but select group of three volunteers who turned out on Saturday to join our committee members and bailiffs at Grey Mist Mere in filling two one ton tote sacks of rubbish. OK there was quite a large proportion that had 'overflowed' from the adjacent household waste site but also plenty left by scum who do not deserve to be called anglers.
