11th October 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th October, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Sandiway small lake is producing some cracking carp catches,  I am led to believe that four thirtys came out in the past week or so plus some stunning upper doubles. As usual I cannot name names but the back-up corroboration is in the number of bookings as they are not there for 'the camping'. Still it is really great to know that our stocking policy is producing the goods for the benefit of all members because the high protein baits our members are using also suit other species particularly the tench and bream. It would be interesting if a member really targetted the quality roach that this water holds.  On Saturday a charity horseride is taking place that will pass from Whitgate Way along the track that connects to the centre one and then along this between our two lakes. It will not effect anglers in any way.
A couple of issues have been brought to my attention this past week both in breach of our rules. The first is that under no circumstances must carp or other species over 2.5lbs be retained by any means without the express permision of the committee or in authorised matches. Members are permitted to photgraph specimen fish at the time of capture after which they must be released immediately. The second issue may not seem as important but those who bring non-members onto our private locked fisheries are putting our club at risk in this current claim society that has evolved. Strictly members only means just that.
I spent a day at our Loton Park Fishery on the River Severn last week accompanied by fellow committee member Ade Green at a meeting over access issues with the Agent. It is a fact that when we first took on these rights the land was used just for grazing and driving to the river by vehicle was a piece of cake in dry conditions. Farming usage has changed over time and now without a 4x4 or one with good ground clearance it is virtually impossible. The agent has agreed to look at car parking arrangements, taking out ruts, stone gateways, and open up those that restrict free passage along the river.
This excercise didn't take all day and we just happened to have rods and bait in the car and it would have been a sin to leave without checking out the river. I gave gave Ade the choice of swim and chose one upstream. It was head down to catch the first fish, ....and yes it was yours truly ensuring Ade knew about it; after that it was one a chuck running a chubber through with double maggot a metre or so from the bank. All went well until suddenly Ade appeared at my side (having so far in the session blanked)as I was unhooking a plump roach. Casting in again and several runs down the swim produced nothing until it hit me like a brick, Ade had clomped along the waters edge and scattered the fish, I was ever so grateful and told him so in no uncertain terms. He then broke his duck and started catching a a mixture of small chub, dace, and roach, the latter were really good stamp fish. And to interest the game anglers a salmon of well into double figures jumped in my swim. We will be back.
Our Mersey Saturday Series saw Ray Boden put together a nice net of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot to take a well deserved win with 12-2-0. Ray had almost 5lbs to spare over runner-up Alan Birchall who weighed in 7-7-0 after a dodgy start when he fell in and was warned for swimming.
Boden again showed his mastery of pole tactics on the river when he took another win on our Sunday Mersey Series with even a few ounces increase on his previous days catch that again left him well clear of the rest of the field. With a weight of 12-5-0 he was exactly 5lbs ahead of second placed King of the River (Ant Higham) who weighed 7-5-0 of roach and perch taken on groundbait feeder and maggot.
Weights were well down on our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday fished on the Bridgewater at Preston Brook. It saw John Dagnall put together his first win of the series this year with 1-10-5 followed by George Hollis with 1-7-2. Next week please note a change of venue to the Trent & Mersey at School Lane.
WAA Headquarters at 52, Parker Street are open as usual every Friday between 7 & 8-30pm for new members, subscriptions, night permit renewals, and any queries. More catch reports please for inclusion in this column, send details to frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk or ring me on 01928 716238.
