27th September, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes
Tony Rough read my last week's report of Ian Rose's session on the River Dee at Shocklach and on Sunday decided to try the stretch for himself. He was blanking after trying three swims but a change to one below a gravel bar led to instant action with lots of quality dace, grayling to over a pound, and lots of small trout. Tony trotted a small Avon float down his swim loose-feeding maggot. This illustrates the value of sharing your catch info with fellow members.
Following his bathroom DIY catastrophe a number of months ago Fishless Fletcher has finally been allowed out. Back fishing with his partner in crime Eric J Smith on Cicily Mill it wasn't the usual hectic action but Fishless still managed a tench and three crucians, the best over 2lbs. On this occasion Eric was struggling and only had two bites all day resulting in a small crucian but then hooked into a really solid fish. Opting to let his mate net the fish proved to be an unwise choice for as the golden flanks of the fish came into view Fishless made his move with the net, only for Eric to see the fish of dreams disappear out of sight. The tirade of abuse that followed is unprintable.
I visited one of our forgotten waters for the first time in twenty five years on Tuesday and soon realised why I hadn't been back sooner. The tiny high banked Bollin was the venue where I caught this tiny river dropping from flood conditions. Despite over 2000yards of fishing there are few pegs, I fished two and blanked. I decided to try a few casts on the Mersey on the way home and managed two small roach, phew, I hate blanking.
Our Mersey Saturday Series saw Martin Lenihan take his second win of the year with a nice net of roach and perch taken on pole and maggot. Martin with 11-5-0 was almost 4lbs ahead of second placed Jimmy Byrne who weighed a similar mix of fish taken on the same method for 7-6-0.
Sunday saw a new Mersey Championship winner for 2016 when veteran angler Jimmy Gannon bucked the current trend and chose groundbait feeder and bread punch tactics over pole or float, it was the right decision as he added a bonus bream of 5lbs to to his 3lbs plus of roach for a total weight of 8-8-0. In joint second place was yesterday's winner Martin Lenihan and match organiser Ray Boden with 7-6-0. Martin fished a feeder whilst Ray chose bolognaise.
Weights were down on our Disabled & Over 60's match on Monday fished on the Bridgewater at Keckwick. The best results came to the right of the bridge towards Preston Brook and Jimmy Byrne put together a catch of small silver fish for 3-2-8. Alan Brown on 3-1-10 was the runner-up and it was so close that another ounce would have seen the order reversed.
