19th July 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

19th July, 2016 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

I am really pleased with the results of my recent request for feedback on our river fisheries. On Sunday David Evans visited the River Vyrnwy at Llanymynech where his first challenge was to find the river as the banks were 5ft high with nettles, grass and weeds. Not easily deterred he managed to make my way through and create a peg where a high, slightly coloured river ran alongside an eddy. Running a stick float through and feeding hemp and caster with caster on the hook it only took a few minutes before catching his first fish, a small dace. A few more dace and a change to maggot resulted in an increase in bites/fish. Over four hours David caught over forty small fish, a mix of dace and chub, but nothing bigger than 5oz., good sport nevertheless. All of the fish were in excellent condition.  As ever, the surroundings add to the pleasure when fishing this type of water. A good day, and no sign of any cormorant!

In my reply to David I told him of my recent evening river session on Tuesday evening in Ireland after spotting a salmon in a tiny truly wild stretch of river. I couldn't tackle up quick enough and with rod and landing net in hand I chose my way down the 15ft bank carefully ....or so I thought as within a split second I found that my first foot hold was a void and next stop the river head first into the mud. The salmon gone, and I was left bleeding, muddy, soaking wet, and feeling decidedly sorry for myself. The only saving grace was my new phone dried out OK. That's fishing.

At last a recent Mersey stick-float win and a new name to head the winners list when Peter Jones fishing my favourite river method put together a weight of 9-7-0 of perch and skimmers to 8oz. Peter used caster to edge match organizer Ray Boden into second place. Ray fished pole and maggot to end up with a similar net of fish for 8-13-0.

Our Disabled & Over 60's match fished the Mersey saw canal ace Lenny Dutton win with 7-4-0 with runner-up Bernie Lee just a couple of fish away from the win with 6-10-0. Both anglers had all roach and perch catches with not a skimmer in site. With the river still not producing the big bream weights any method can produce a winner.

It was the final match of our Woodshaw Series on Monday evening and every angler received a prize. Thanks must go to our local bailiff team who organise this match series annually and also to the parents and youngsters who took part.

Weights plummeted for this end of series event with Tyler Davies needing only 2-4-0 of small silvers taken on maggot for a weight of 2-4-0 (I believe the lowest winning weight overall). Runner-up was James Brown with 1-6-0. Series overall was won by Scot Roberts with 40 points with James Brown the runner-up on 32.5 points.
