4th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.
Eric Smith and his 12 year old grandson Callum Postill chose Grey Mist Mere as a venue for their first visit to a Warrington Anglers Association fishery. They were impressed with this Association owned water that many take for granted, and the fishing on the day wasn’t too bad either. Callum had 4 runs missed 2, hooked 2, and lost a near double figure fish at the net. He ended his session with his first ever pike, a fish of 5lbs and just maybe thoughts of what could have been, but nevertheless a catch that he will never forget. To quote Eric, “We are new members and this day alone has made it worthwhile joining”.
Mike (Spike) Bamber reports catching a 23lbs plus distinctive mirror from this fishery on Sunday which was only stocked three years ago at 14lbs. Not too bad a growth rate, a gain of just over 3lbs per year. Currently fish are already ordered two years in advance but this is information that more members should be sharing as it can have a bearing of future stocking requirements.
Just a couple of lines to quell rumours, the latest that we have given up the Mount …… one word, NO. Also that Coppull Anglers are no longer one of our licence depots …… again total bilge. In fact Mike and Ellen are excellent ambassadors of our club.
Our regular Mersey Series match was cancelled last Sunday due to high tides but that did not stop match co-organiser Paul Harding from having a chuck for a couple of hours before the impending inundation. Fishing his usual feeder tactics he ended up with twenty roach and a skimmer.
Our Monday Disabled & Over 60’s match was fished on the Dead Length pegged from the Walton Bridge end towards Houghs Bridge. Veteran angler George Barber who is rarely out of the money elevated himself from his previous week’s second place with a roach and skimmer catch of 6-1-12 taken on bread punch. In the news again but this time in the main prizes is match organiser John Dagnall in second place with an all skimmer net for 4-11-0.
Our Members Flyer fished on Saturday at Lymm again saw cracking weights with National Squad Manager Jeff Stoll leaving the opposition in his wake with an all roach catch of 13-15-11 taken on pole and red maggot. Ste Hirst maintained his runner-up position of the previous week with 10-5-14.
Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
