11th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes

11th February 2014 Warrington Anglers Association Guardian Notes.

Our regular Mersey Series match was back on again following its cancellation the previous week due to atrocious weather and high tides. It was fishable on Sunday but still carrying a lot of extra water which coupled with windy conditions sorted the men out from the boys. Winner Roy Everson wearing his brand spanking new Drennan waterproofs christened them in good style with 4-13-9. He didn’t have a fish in the net but with 15 minutes to go and out of the blue came a welcome almost 4lbs bream making it game, set, match. He was tempted to kiss it but was stopped by a fat lady behind him singing! Runner-up was match organiser Ant Higham on the next peg who thought that he had it in the bag with his five roach and a skimmer bream for 1-8-0.

The Monday Disabled & Over 60’s match was fished on the Bridgewater Canal at Red Lane Bridge and turned out to be probably the worst result on record. Match organiser John Dagnall put it down to a severe overnight frost which apparently suited his style of fishing as he clocked up his first win of the year with 13-4. Bob Wallwork back on the match scene following a long absence was in runner-up spot with 8-0.

In one section only two anglers actually caught but Lenny Dutton with 2-12 suffered his lowest ever result where he actually drew coin, just edging out Graham Belton on 2-4. I know a few weeks ago I wrote that it can’t get any worse, well surely weights cannot go any lower otherwise anglers will be issued with raffle tickets at the draw.

Martin Griffiths who organises our Members Flyer matches every Saturday battled it out with Stu Hardman fish for fish on the Bridgewater Canal at Lymm. It was a close run thing but Martin ended up with 7-10-5 pushing Stu’s 7-3-0 into second place. Pole and bread punch plus a few caster fish was the winning method that consisted of roach except for a solitary skimmer.

Members regularly email or ring me asking where the current best venue where they may catch a few fish? You cannot go far wrong than watch the match results, for example this week avoid Red Lane at all costs but get down to Lymm for some silver fish action. It’s a no brainer.

We are looking for witnesses to hopefully catch the person who fly-tipped rubbish at Grey Mist Mere on Tuesday. Please ring or email me with any information.

Please keep those catch reports coming in as they are invaluable to this column and fellow members planning fishing trips. Either ring me on 01928 716238 or email frank@warrington-anglers.org.uk. HQ 52, Parker Street is open as usual between 7 & 9pm on Friday, for subscriptions, new memberships/night permits, or any queries.
